Deep breath.. and relax.

Jenny is happy I found my bicycle too! Okay, my bicycle was found. Good thing too, because my crate of ammunition, illegally smuggled in via the trans-siberian railroad from the former soviet union, hasn`t yet arrived. So these little punks get to live a little bit longer. In short, my bicycle was found by a shop keeper thrown in a trash heap behind his store (an establishment that at first glance looks like a travel...

The proverbial **** hits the fan.

Tuesday was the vernal equinox day, and a beautiful day at that - I woke up at an appropriately panda-like lazy 11 am, took a leisurely shower (primarily for Denise and Kent`s benefit) and then strolled over to meet some friends for lunch at a beautiful outdoor cafe. I wish I had taken pictures of it - it was gorgeous, with dark stucco walls, wrought copper trellises coated with green patinas, arching gates and crisp...

Suubun no hi (special megamix)

Tommorrow is the Autumnal Equinox Day - time for Japanese to honor their ancestors and the deceased, and time for me to catch up on my sleep / lesson preparations. The weather has been slowly turning more and more autum-like, which is absolutely thrilling for me. Finally the oppressive dog days of summer are gone! ;) Anyway, don`t have anything interesting to post today, so please enjoy a picture of the Sai river located right...

Pictars

too sleepy to write anything clever, so I`m just gonna throw up some random pictures from the school undokai and my enkai later on that evening. A fellow member of team Midori - we won a complete sweep, by the way... Vicious high school girls duke it out in the rope pull. One of my students acknowledges the overwhelming superiority of Team Midori BEFORE: Listless teachers stare glumly into space at my enkai Sensing a...

Enkai and all that.

had my enkai (welcome party) today (of which I was informed of yesterday morning). Not only that, but today was also sports day, albeit a very rainy one. Pictures of me drunk at the former, and beating up on hapless highschool students in the tug-of-war from the latter tommorrow, as I`m heading out for some more drinkage as of now. Now listening to: "The Streets - Has it come to this?" (Original pirate material -...

All your bandwidth is mine.

Driving along the ocean... [Just as a note: this entry is going to take forever to load. Sorry. :) ] In the entirety of the noto peninsula, there really exists no town, place or destination that could in all good conscience be referred to as "noteworthy". Certainly blessed with an abundance of nature, a welcome lack of urban sprawl and multiple onsens which claim to fight all manner of ailments, the Noto peninsula nonetheless...

Maintaining

wow... back from the deep inaka after several days. And only a few bruises to show for it ;) Spent the weekend (and significant portions of the week, hmm...) up in anamizu, for a matsuri, super sneaky surprise birthday party, ocean-side frolicking and so forth. Too sleepy to write about it now, but maybe tommorrow / the day after - pictures forthcoming as well. But for now, I have to make lesson plans for...

Nothing interesting at all

I am taking nenkyuu (annual leave) for the rest of the week. Reason? I am bored as hell, and I have finished my sole english novel (all 1200 pages of it), which leaves the terrifying specter of being forced to sit at my desk all day reading one of the 27 dictionaries my predecessor was kind enough to leave for me. I think we are going up to anamizu for some festival / get drunk...

Goblin goods

A quiet weekend, save for an all-nighter saturday night spent watching a nerve-wracking English victory over Macedonia (I`m steadily on my way to turning into a full fledged brit) at the local sports pub and culminating in what I can only describe as an early morning debacle at Mr. Donuts during which we consumed donuts en masse in an (eventually successful) attempt to amass enough "point cards" (awarded for every purchase over 300 yen) to...

Rainy days

Just another rainy, but happy, day in the hood. DVDs for sale in a store: bottom half - porn. Top half? Disney Cartoons Not much happening recently. The other day, I decided to play a game with some of the third year students in class - part of it involved me asking them a series of questions: 1. Do you have a part time job? 2. What is your part time job? 3. Do you...

Pictures...!

Sorry for the rather depressive quality of the last few posts - things were much brighter yesterday as I taught a couple of very enjoyable adult classes (they actually want to learn english!) and some of the third year students (who, while still not much more active than lumps of rotting eggplant, at least weren`t playing on their cell phones in class, and did, on occasion, answer when spoken to). Anyway, to make up for...

Boys, girls and autism

Ran across an interesting article on autism and gender the other day: http://www.msnbc.com/news/958646.asp?0ql=c7p Now listening to: "Scarface - Smile" (What`s up with all the old-school westcoast tracks?!) 7:30 am...

I am not a real teacher.

To start, I read this on newsoftheweird the other day: Three teenagers with paintball guns terrorized kids on a playground until they fired into the wrong group of kids, one of whom returned fire with a real gun, wounding two paintballers. [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 8-13-03] So when compared to that, I guess my ghetto school isn`t so bad...! Today, as I was whirling about in my office chair, playing with a couple of chopsticks (mondays are...
