Cold Tokyo Days

It’s been cold and sort of gloomy off and on recently in Tokyo. There have been some intermittent days of sunshine as well, but for the most part it’s just been that long, dull, slow drag through the middle of January.

I know I haven’t updated in forever, but that’s because I’ve been working on the grand site redesign I’ve been talking about since last year. As some of you may have noticed, I haven’t updated my moblog in almost a year, primarily because the script that powers it just sort of stopped working one day. Unfortunately, that script is written in Perl, a language I don’t know, so that kind of was that.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that enough was enough, and I buckled down and started to write a new moblogging program from scratch in PHP. Turns out this is something that is a lot harder to do than it first appears, mainly because while it’s easy to send e-mail messages using PHP, it’s a whole different story when you want to read e-mail messages using PHP – especially if you need to parse out images and stuff.

Anyway, after a lot of elbow grease (and learning more than I ever wanted to know about MIME types and e-mail formats), I’ve finally got the main core of the script working. It’s not done yet, but this was the last major obstacle left to tackle in my site update, and now that it’s (almost) out of the way, the update should be chugging along towards the finish in short order.

Enough of the excuses. I’ll be back with the next installment of the Great Autumn Roadtrip 2008 soon, so stay tuned!

Just so you know Mike, the groundhog saw his shadow today, so you know what that means.. 18 more years of winter!
My next report is to tell you how Flag Day went!

Wow, that is a very cold-looking world. As much as I admire your ability to work with shots, I am somewhat unnerved by the perspective these give – social isolation and life amidst the shadows.
I just mentioned you in a conversation yesterday! Someone asked if I knew anyone who had experienced Harajuku, and I said, “Well, Michaelpanda would, but it’s been a while since I talked to him.” So it’s quite neat that you became active again today :D
Where are you now? Gearing up for law school?

ahhh panda i received your lovely new years card!! i totally made you a christmas card and never sent it..surprise. i really want to send you something i make in my ceramics class. i wonder how expensive it would be? i’m going to have to check that out. i’m working on the wheel this semester, which is something i hadn’t done since high school so it is kinda rough. reminds me of the time you went somewhere and did that. i don’t really remember much about that story at all except it happened :/ my memory is terrible..but anyway maybe i can send you a couple bowls because that is all i’ve been doing for the past two months. you could put some yummy food in them! i’m also taking an art welding class. pretty intense for an art class lol. welding is HARD and i knew that but it’s one of those things you have to actually try in order to fully appreciate how much. anyway, thanks so much for the new years card it really brightened up my dreary february :) and i am totally buying all your excuses about the blog don’t worry.
