Sick Panda

That's awful timing! Hope you feel better very soon (without o.d.ing on the bottle of pills), and breeze through the test.

Take it easy, and think of all the hard work you've already done! The battle's almost won :)

My life at present

Good luck! I thought you were a science major; why law school? *shudder*

The 3A language books are fantastic, aren't they? I have one for 2-kyu. Which other books would you recommend for level 2 and level 1 exams?

What a panda eats

oh, and in reply to your comment:
the govt is making it ever harder for me to stay :( it seems I must prepare myself for the possibility of leaving; perhaps I go to japan too eh?

in contrast, the exercising is going much better. I signed up for a full pass and am now attending classes at least once a week. unfortunately I am also eating twice as much. :/

What a panda eats

ditto what she said above.
also, you need to make a "food" section in your blog so you can teach people like us to make fantastic yummy food like you do.
fanx.

Nighttime Sakura

See, that's precisely why one should always indulge one's whims and fancies as they come along. Work (quite annoyingly) *always* waits.

The cherry blossoms in DC are just going into full bloom this week and I'm going early this morning (it's 4am) to enjoy it before the throngs of tourists make their appearence.

Sorry for the long silence - lots up. Much to do. Still no job. :( The quest continues. Hope you're doing well!

Castles and Sunsets

btw, utterly unrelated: I see you've a black macbook ; have you had any problems with the mic? Mine has gone nearly deaf, and can hardly pick up sound unless I yell into it (which is why my video was so soft). The isight unit has just been replaced too!

Castles and Sunsets

He returns from the void!

Thanks for the nice long comment and for offering to write me a referral. Maybe I'll take you up on the latter if my future employer refuses. :)

I'm afraid I never got the card; I asked my sis to keep an eye out even after I left SF but she hasn't seen anything of it. I suspect the neighbours might have taken it by accident. :( But of course I got your email! How else would I have sent you your card? So silly.

Anyway, what news on the postgrad decision and coming back?

Blue Skies over Tokyo (Sky Worship III)

The guy in the kilt with the Chinese yo-yo is most bizarre. Your photos are always so crisp and well-composed! How do you do it?

Did you get my card? I imagine it must have arrive a tiny bit late; but as you saw, even Santa had problems.

I'm afraid your card got lost in the mail somewhere as neither my sis nor her neighbour saw it (same mailbox). Sad :(

Fingerprinting

hahaha, it worked! That's quite hilarious.

I survived that day, and live to fight another finals day -- today. :) One final scheduled, and another take-home test due. Last one. Mustn't give in. MUST. FINISH. PAPER.

I'd promise to post after this, but we all know what that's worth. :D

Fingerprinting

Well, now any remnant of hope for the Japanese system/society I still held after learning of the Real Japan has been blown to smithereens.

Your paper on the topic is quite convincing - especially since they hardly bother masking their actions - and it makes me both angry and disappointed that such a prominent developed country should still adopt such primitive attitudes/practices and get away with it.

I had been planning on visiting Japan next summer, time permitting, but serious doubts have now set in. Of course, it would be wonderful to go, but why should I have to offer up my dignity to be trampled on and my rights to be thrown out the window?

Sigh. :(

Nekobukuro Kitty Kats

Great pictures! Love the third kitty shot. I might need to pay a visit to this place, seeing as I can't have a cat lest my dad decides never to visit me. Oh wait... ^^ I kid.

I heard about the fingerprinting policy that's going into effect in Japan, but I imagine you're referring to other, more serious issues as well. Now I'm curious, not to mention a little concerned. Do you think the new policies will have heavy implications for visitors to Japan as well? I'm considering holidaying there for a bit next summer.

Tatami Nap Panda

hahaha! A cat house, how cute. watashi mo ikitai!

I wonder if the cats suffer from anxiety from being handled by so many people, though. I remember the SPCA in SFO kept the animals in rooms and wouldn't let anybody but staff and serious adopters play with them as apparently it causes them distress to become attached to the visitor and have them leave.

ps: that is a LOT of panda plushies above your workspace. :D

Birthday Scarf Panda

Hello hello,

Happy belated birthday! I'm horribly sorry to have missed even the week-after, but I hope you had a better time after the disappointment of the day itself. Won't you tell us exactly when your birthday is so we may innundate you with all sorts of things birthday-ey next year forth?

My blog is languishing away as I've just no time to post right now. A combination of having much reading and tests, a telly in my dorm, as well as no laptop is very detrimental to blogging. Wait not, and you shall not be disappointed. (sorry.)

cheers from boring dc,
adele

ps: I do admire your keen fashion sense. That scarf is very tasteful. If only chic were more affordable!

Night Photos and Naughty E-mails

hahahaha! can't say you didn't ask for it, though.

The transition period is always a little confusing, but it's really not that terrible as os x has a rather steep learning curve.

Some helpful shortcuts:
cmd + H - hides program
cmd + M - minimises window
cmd + W - closes window (without quitting program)
cmd + ` - toggles between windows in same program
cmd + Q - quit program (when all else fails ;)

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Apple :)

I feel I must mention that I am currently typing this on a black Macbook. Great minds think alike.

Boots and Letter Campaign

Am I dead yet, you ask? Very nearly there, Panda. Very nearly. I do hate this college business.

I would love to sign up for this very wonderful letter-writing thingy, but repeated experience has taught me that I am utterly hopeless when it comes to written correspondence (my blog must give you some idea). T_T But -- but-- someone who writes letters! You have my admiration. :D

ps: I do like your room! How neat it is! I especially love how everything seems centered about your futon as I practically live in my bed. ^^;

Panda vs. The Bathtub

I... I fear for you, Panda.

But, oh well, haven't we all had our *moments*? ^^ Ahahhah, I recall that one time -- uhh, actually let's not go there.

Inappropriate...!

To think I once had a pure and naive love for all things Japanese. Ah, how quickly that changed. Frequent reactions of "ooh, Japanese! how cute/cool/funny!" became "oh, Japanese. wtf?".

While I don't deny falling victim to kawaii culture and the like, the society itself (and its incessant focus on sex), to put it simply, *scares me*. Your post reminds me how thankful I am that I never grew up there.

INAPPROPRIATE!

Setsubun - the face smashing festival

Dear panda,

Indeed, I am terrible -- absolutely terrible -- at updating, commenting, and generally attending to this blogging business. *hangs head in shame* If you can imagine my days as a repetition of classes, eating, reading, and sleeping, however, you already have all my blog material in mind. 'Tis sad, I know.

I haven't kept up with my blogroll very well either, but I have seen a bit of your new entries, and it seems you had an interesting time in europe. But how is it possible that you had NO FISH AND CHIPS IN ENGLAND? o_o le shock!

I must go write my due-in-four-hours paper now. After that (and some sleep), I shall heed your words and update. How you motivate me! (i.e. thank you, I do need a push in the right direction now and then. :)

The Roundup

eeeek. myspace. *rinses mouth with chlorine* I must say, though, you must have done all that is possible to make it -- not just nice -- even better looking than many, many non-my..... blogs. Kudos! I wish I had m4d sk1llz like that.

Thanks for the entertaining story about that enkai! 22's really not a bad guess though, considering how most people graduate at 21 (min). Hahaha, guess you can't win them all. ^^

Thundar Dolphan!

Not the dolphins, spare them! spare them! In the Land of Cute, dolphins get turned into roaring killer creatures? The mind boggles.

I do like roller coasters, but paranoia about the warnings and history of poor construction, brain damage and so on always make me think twice (at least in the case of those that claim to be/have "the TALLEST/BIGGEST/HIGHEST MORTALITY RATE!!1")

How was Thanksgiving?

The Great Bike Theft of 2006

I'm sorry to hear this -- the whole ordeal sounds quite awful. Reminds me of a chinese saying that goes: "A roof leak is followed by torrential rain; the late ship runs into a headwind." Basically, misfortune rarely comes alone.

However, I think something good is *bound* to happen after something like this (it should!). Hope you're feeling better now -- chin up!

Sky Worship

I thought I read somewhere that some fashion guru insisted that despite some belief to the contrary, pleated pants *are* actually more flattering (or something to that effect).
06-10-05

Sky Worship

Hallo, great views you got there! I especially love the ones where the bright blue sky and sharply contrasting while clouds shine through, almost jumping off the page at you. I could while away hours watching the sky (and I have ^^).

It is nice to take in the view from a high vantage point. My favourite view is over Paris ("I love Paris in the springtime..." :D ), which I still remember fondly after having seeing it only once some time ago.

ps: now the random test post must stay forever on my page, it's raison d'etre being solely to anchor your comment in place. you have given it a cause! a purpose! it thanks you.

Jumbo the giant panda

Oh no, how awful. I know what you mean. For some reason, old asian ladies can be terribly upfront and insensitive (I speak from some experience -_-;). The problem is that it's like them gossipping -- in the sense that they probably don't intend any insult or malice, so you can't really hold a grudge against them for being deliberately mean. Either way, it must sting. :( Don't take it to heart! You're really not "jumbo".

I'm not sure what reaction they expect (though I suspect they don't really expect any), but I normally respond in one of two ways. One, I laugh it off with an, "Oh really?", or Two, I express worry/justification in the same gossipy tone. Either way, you should never imply that they are wrong -- or there will really be gossip.

ps: the food looks delicious. - hungry a.

Leaving on a jet plane...

(whoops, just realised that I'm way too late to wish you a good trip. ^^;; well, consider it for your return then! cheers)

Leaving on a jet plane...

Hooray for holidays! I'll be taking one too, to Boston, for a few days before Fall semester begins.

You'll be going to Wisconsin? To think that I almost went there; I turned down an offer from Beloit College. :) Oh well, if you're ever in dc, let me know!

Bon voyage, flying panda!

ps: I like the two bears on your dashboard. ^^
06-08-09

Rocking out...

Oo-er -- can't say we weren't forewarned. ^_^;;; Seems like you're having a ton of fun, though!

ps: Wuh-oh. I had no idea that DC was that dangerous till you mentioned the fact. Hahaha. Ha. Guess I'll have to play really really low-key...

Great Takayama Road Trip Part I

I love the sembei shots (it's huge!). Anything that looks that good must be horribly unhealthy though, desho? ^^;

Come to the light! Come to Apple -- join us!! :D

Moritheil: How true. I'm weak against Brit humour.

Sun and Rain...

This is lovely! I do wish you'd do more picture posts; the scenes look so different (read: clean/ orderly? :D) from what I'm used to here. If only I had a flower shop near my door too. Although you say that it lends to quite a bit of activity, I imagine walking past it in the mornings would be a nice way to start the day. While I'm wishing, I wish I were in Japan too. ^_^

By the way, here's an interesting gaijin-in-Japan blog. The author does a weekly comic based on a challenge that readers set him. When I saw his most recent post, it reminded me of your previous entry (about how authorities seem to have rather parental qualities), so I thought I'd mention it to you. Cheers!

How Apple iTunes 5.0 almost ruined my life...

Does itunes 5.0 perform remarkably better than 4.0? I'm refusing to upgrade to itunes 5.0 for the moment since apple decided to revamp the look. Sad! They should have stuck with brushed metal.

"To send someone to coventry" is a dated british way of saying, "to give someone the silent treatment". I blame it all on Enid Blyton. A friend of mine had been giving me mixed signals for a while, and then until recently, suddenly chose not to speak to me. So, confused adele = unhappy adele = frustrated post. :)

Busy webcoding panda...

Very cool. Am turning a little green, not unlike the shade you used on the jet site. :)

Hope all is going well. Bonne chance for the presentation!
