Nice photos, as usual. What lens is Maya using? I've got lens-envy, as usual.

2008 Autumn Roadtrip - Part IX

Yay! Update! When is your next road trip again? I guess autumn is passing by - I would love to see white white white pictures of Japan in the wintertime. But camping might be a pain at that point.

Sunday Skies - Sky Worship VI

Hey, my current book series author, George RR Martin, has had a gigantic case of writer's block - his next book, A Dance With Dragons, was supposed to come out on June of 2006.

2008 Autumn Roadtrip - Part V

Mmmmm. Eating. Air.

We were just talking about the difference in urban densities between the US and Europe/Japan.

It still takes my breath away when flying from a super-dense city like Chicago or New York, and then seeing that they are simply little blips of buildings within a great expanse of land.

Whereas in Europe and Japan, you feel that towns/cities have grown to such an extent that they are merging with neighboring cities. This takes my breath away in a different manner.

Glad to hear about the remoteness of Iya Valley, and your enjoyment of the fresh air and gorgeous day!

Yay! Great update. Looking forward to part VI.

Site Redesign 2009

So... No ability for people to comment on piccies of the day or the tumbleblog? or is there a way to feed these into the larger blog context? Maybe in some later, LATER release.

-------------------------

One thing I have to say to your design school entry: Yes, it's unbelievable.

However, one has to realize that usability and "design" are different things, and most "designers" really don't think about utility, target audience, etc. This is even separate from usability problems you encountered due to /technical/ issues like bad coding.

2008 Autumn Roadtrip - Introduction

Yay, road trip pics! Can't wait to see them!

Tokyo Throwaway Pics

The ordinary and the mundane always take a new meaning when one these are provided in a new context.

From my online perch in New York, I revel in looking into ordinary life in other countries - even pictures of combinis in Japan are awesome.

Thanks for keeping up with your pic posts! I, on the other hand, have lagged way behind, even though I have kept on photographing and journaling.

Monorail Blue Skies (Sky Worship V)

Road trip!!!

Yes, I love my circular polarizing filter, which I used throughout my South America trip.

However, the camera that went with said filter is broken, so now I have resorted to using Jasmine's new point-and-shoot. For which I bought an underwater housing.

Camera toys are so much fun!

Of cicadas and summer

Yay, another post! Love the video blogs, keep them coming.

Sorry I haven't written (or blogged) in a while, but have been absolutely swamped with life and work, especially since I was preparing for a 2-week vacation. Was, because I am officially ON vacation now, catching up with correspondence and such.

We received the puchi-puchis about a week ago - they are absolutely fabulous! I love the edamame one the best. My reply package to you is building momentum, I just have to complete my letter to you. Any requests?

Another Week...

Glad to see your summer post! It is absolutely gorgeous here in New York - not too hot (yet).

Tokyo Blue Skies II (Sky Worship IV)

remember, the sky is great - but it's the solids/containers against the void that create context for it. that's as philosophical as my comments will get. :)

Blue Skies over Tokyo (Sky Worship III)

Awww! Harajuku! Is law in the future for you? That's a first! All this time I thought the Japanese language and genetics were your focus.

As always, the depths of your interests and personality come up and amaze me.

If Columbia Law is in your future, our family will definitely look forward to another panda in the city!

Happy New Year 2008

Hey MP,

Happy New Year!

Our holidays were fantastic. We went down to Philadelphia to spend Christmas with family, and then came back home and had a great time playing host to friends this past Saturday - the first large gathering in our new place.

For New Year's Eve, we decided to cook at home, and had shabu-shabu as a late dinner. I even went as far as making a traditional ponzu sauce, using lemons, mirin, rice vinegar, soy sauce and kombu. Mmmmmm. Food.

We still have plenty of leftovers from both gatherings - including a bowlful of batter from which we will make banana and Nutella crepes about 15 more times.

If you ever decide to bite the fingerprinting bullet and visit NY, we are ready to receive guests - you are more than welcome to stay with us (I know that you would probably crash with KC, but the invitation remains open!)

Have a great start to 2008. Best wishes,

Felix

Farmlife

Happy Holidays! I love the fact that farm life in Japan involves archery.

How was the JPLT?

Fingerprinting

Yikers! I always thought the US-VISIT program was extremely flawed and a knee-jerkish, as you pointed out.

I'm soooo bummed you will not be visiting NY - we would have had a chance to finally meet in person!

Post coming soon...

Hang in there! I know all about the crazy convergence of major life events.

Birthday Scarf Panda

life sometimes provides perspective in the strangest ways. i felt like the "elder ambassador" during my year in south america - since most of the people in the grant program that sent me there were college grads. i didn't exactly feel it was "me" vs. "them" - but did feel some sort of distance in terms of personal interests, perspective as to what is important in life, and feelings of responsibility.

just know that you are not so lonely out there - a community (virtual, but virtually real) is out there that does care about you.

belated happy birthday - our family sends you big hugs from over here!

The Great Tohoku Road Trip - Part II

panda - your illustration of "there's no mummy here, let's get out of this temple" is fan-freakin'-tastic! i almost peed in my pants laughing so hard.

The Great Tohoku Road Trip - Part I

panda: as usual, superbly written, the tragi-comic peaks and valleys of your storytelling have managed to enliven my work hours.

How Expedia.com made me hate Yoghurt

Oh noooooooooooOOOOO!!!

I'm sure my disappointment of not being able to live vicariously through you is small compared to your disappointment of not going to Mongolia. Nevertheless, I'm totally sad and bummed out for you.

I have only used expedia ONCE for a hotel reservation, and they royally messed up my vacation. Never mind that I reconfirmed every day the week before, going insofar as reconfirming the reservation the day of - but when I got to the hotel, they told me there was "no room" and that they were going to put us in another "comparable" hotel - NOT.

Have a great road trip - we're looking forward to random vacation pictures from you!
07-07-27

Are you getting fatter...?

how...inappropriate! sigh.

i'll bet you if you tell them that you are going to mongolia for vacation, they will be totally bewildered. "why? can't you just go to a nice onsen like NORMAL people?"

Mongolia Panda

I'm actually getting more and more excited for you about a visit to Mongolia.

And yes, I actually, erm, remember (and admit) to watching that same Julia Roberts documentary where she is in pursuit of wild horses and kindly drinking fermented yak milk tea.

Aside from this doc, history class, and other vague impressions floating from random travel magazine articles, I also vividly remember this fiction novel about textiles dealers pursuing priceless weavings in Ulan Bator and the desert. This made me consider (for 3 seconds) a career as a textiles dealer, where I would be sniffing old fabrics, determining what type of linen or yarn was used with what type of vegetable dye, and bringing it back to New York to sell at a considerable markup.

Sigh. Back to my salaryman desk.

Picture Poast

Apropos to nothing - your canned drink pic just had me daydreaming for the last 15 minutes of my absolute favorite drink in the world: Suntory's grapefruit drink, Gokuri. Drool.

Crayon Post, the Time Lapse Video

wow, nice time lapse video! it takes a lot of forethought to put that together. i like the way you keep on picking up and putting down your keitai.

did you scan or photograph your drawings afterwards?

Night Photos and Naughty E-mails

Panda! You always know how to make my day - and my past few ones have been filled with armageddon-like misery.

Thanks for the story.

Applepanda - The Switch

Ah, the leap into the world of Mac. Congrats, MP!

Now, /we/ just have to wait for either one of our PC laptops to die, and maybe then we'll finally make the leap. Especially since I am not liking the next generation OS for PC, Windows Vista.

Setsubun - the face smashing festival

I love the flying bean bag pics! The new camera just paid for itself right there. By the way, were those circus peanuts I see in the bags?

Great to see another Japan update! And yes, the Japanese looooove their seasons. I read somewhere that, related to related to Cha-Do and tea kaiseki, they have 42 "seasons" in the year.

France Adventure Pt. I

Love your night photos. Is that a laser-light show cone being projected within the Eiffel Tower? How...strange.

Let's see if this comment comes through.

No Chicken, No Life

I vote for going to the Imperial Palace. It's one of those "you gotta do it...once" kinda thing. Like living in NYC and going to the Thanksgiving parade, or living in San Francisco and going to Halloween in the Castro. It's crazy, the crowds are maddening, it was /quite/ an experience, and you will never have to do it again.

Besides, the Narita-san temple will always be there, and you should save it for one of those weekends when you feel that you need to get away - but not too far away from Tokyo.
