Random Pictures

interesting images.
as it turns out, this "Center" I speak of is... well... where I'm "working right now" but obviously, in reality I'm fumbling about the net. *hehe*

The Center = The Center for Pan Asian Community Services, Inc. (CPACS) who's site needs an obvious overhaul, but they haven't told me to do anything, so I haven't... YET. Until it gets to a point where I just can't stand it any longer (I just choose not to look)... I mean, seriously: www.cpacs.org <- it's really QUITE sad.

Glad someone took the time to read what I had to say. As it turns out, the last long entry RE:Matrix Reloaded wasn't a very "popular" piece either. People seem to enjoy more of... "oh i had this horrid day, and i'm here to share it so you can feel better about YOURself!" kinda things. :P hahahaha.

Okay. So, yeah. Umm. Gotta go to the dentist. *sighs*

it's too hot for me to read.. so i skimmed pics below. i like the..faces/icon one i cook.. doesn't mean i cook well. i have officially numbed/killed my taste buds where everything tastes the same. the nearest convenience store to me is.... a 10 min. drive. haha. when ppl from yokohama take trips to your town to "touch agriculture" (how the superintendent translated it to me today), you kno u're out in the boonies! but they have ready-made stuff at the market too. but it's the same stuff over n over. trust me, the one thing i'm dying for when i get home is all food.

... yeah, it's frustrating that u guys don't kno where u're placed yet. i wanna kno who's coming here after me! so i can warn 'em. j/k i like my town.

Moving Melodies

okay, so that was hella long, and I honestly don't quite have the time to read every line--considering i'm at work, and a 4 month project coming to its closing on Monday... ... ... deadlines.

BUT, since my boss doesn't seem to be around... ... ...

SO~, yeah. ATB. Nothing against them, at all, but I don't know too many of their songs. I've heard of ATC, too... ... wonder if there's an ATA and ATD, at least in terms of music groups. *hehe*

AND as for the race tracks--i was only looking at the pictures.. hehe--looks pretty niiiice.

Uncle Sam Wants You!--I've always found that statement inherently wrong. But anyway. Truth be told, most high-ranking officers of the Army, Navy, Air Force & the likes, are actually very intelligent people... but we all know that. Had we an interest in the Army, wouldn't he think that we would have taken ourselves into Westpoint or somethin'? Oh well... I know a couple of army/navy people and the ones that are currently in it, seem to enjoy it, but the retired individuals are just full of pride and don't have much to offer in a conversation outside of the realm of being they've become all so accustomed to.

On top of which, many of their p.o.v. are so damn narrow, that it's difficult to carry on an actual "conversation" without it becoming a full out debate, which is completely skewed by their on-set and mentality. Again, I speak of veterans.

But anyway, boss is back. *sigh* Back to work I go.

peayce,

hmm.. almost simultaneous reply entries? *heh*

so yeah, ヘルス・フェア is... a health fair. what can i say. *talking to the department of health services, cancer awareness and education people about it as i write...*

essentially what the fair is, as is with every "fair" of this type, much lies in educating the community & a certain public (usually divided by socio-economics or by ethnicity) in providing medical information. now, where i work (the center for pan asian community services) we are obviously catering more towards the asian american community, but we certainly don't limit ourselves. the data we are able to collect, of participants, go to use in providing that data (just numbers) when writing our grants and proposals to the state & national governments as well as larger organizations, in getting funding to run certain programs for the community.

the health fair, itself, is a product of such grants, so it's a circular thing... one begets one, begets the other, begets the original and so forth.

what we do at our health fair (2nd annual georgia asian american health fair) is while we provide information, we also provide health screenings, with a complete and holistic approach to health care--from acupuncture to every-day internal medicine stuff--as well as getting gov't agencies and national oraganizations (like American Cancer Society) to provide some of the more costly screenings.

and our target is generally the uninsured, under-insured, and under priviledged individuals in the community, and letting them know of the exisitng programs and facilities where they can recieve health care, to a certain extent, without having to worry about their insurance status.

okay. yeah. so that's that. whoo-hoo~! that was hella long, huh? but this is what i've been explaining to hella people for a few months. i just don't want this information in my head any more~!!!!! 4 more days!!! aaahhhhH~!!!!

::taks:: yet, again.

you think swanky establishments in the States are bad... (price wise)... you really don't want to mistakenly go into such an establishment in Japan. Administrative note

the time's a coming, eh?
sounds great about the AC thing. I think countries throughout Asia just need one big AC system to cool out the entire freaking country. Screw ecology and how that would mess up the crops and all sorts of stuff... what'll it be all worth without people to consume them?! *hehehehe* so, i kid... but still, a nice little cool area to keep from over-heating and dying would be nice. ^_^

and don't hate on the french too much man... it's such a useful language in this country... ... ... ... ... ... what a waste of years in French class back in high school. hehehe. ooh, but some beautiful women! ^_^ and saying shit in french just sounds sexy, though i personally prefer English accents. lol.

hmm... i used that same book for my physics class? i remembered it was extremely expensive, and it's going for $10 now?? all those paper/ink probably cost moe than $10... you should've sold it on half.com or something. and physics is like math, they're not coming up with anything new, but new edition books just keep coming....

The photo caption where you say "Three generations indulging in a rare moment of nap-time on the floor." is wrong. You and your brother are the same generation... despite whatever gap you might feel is there. :D

I wouldn't sweat the omiyage too much. I didn't large items, which is to say I don't think I got anything particularly nice. Mostly postcards and a box of skittles and m&ms from costco. Dinky but still takes up a bit of space and hopefully appreciated! By the way, I'll be more north than you in Fukushima-ken. The coldness that will be the mountains in Aizu. G'luck packing!

The time draws near, doesn't it. Good luck with everything. Gimme a hollar if there's anything I can help you with, once you're out there "on the field"... I deal with "troubled youths" on a daily basis... there might be a few things up my sleeves that could be of use to you, if you run into some problems. ^_^

Anyway, have a safe trip bro...

At first I was impressed by the super-cuteness of Kittah, but then all the pandas.... Your description of rapture was perfect and hilarious. I like the vicious pandas. My boyfriend used to draw me lots of pandas. Tiny doodles like one I taped to my computer: It's a very sharp-toothed panda that says "I've come to eat your celery!" (I used to eat a lot of celery) - and I've decided to copy them and imprint them onto plain dishes. I won't bother explaining the method. If I get to it soon, I'll make sure you know about the pictures. I really want a panda costume too!

All about bicycles...

japan and bikes is messed up. have you seen the people who all pile up on one bike? people with bikes and umbrellas are just DANGEROUS. same with people who talk on their keitai and bike... it's good that you're not "too manly" for the basket. My bf refused to ride a bike with a basket. A few of my friends went out and stole the only 2 dirt bikes in the town just to avoid riding a bike with a basket.

Be safe!!

Posted 8/25/2003 at 12:48 pm by KittyinJapan

Too bad about the voice. One of the JETs in our town lost his and it didn't come back for almost a year. In fact the cases sound strangely familiar. He also did a little too much karaoke for his own good. As for medicine look for the little spray bottles with a picture of a head and sharp pointy red arrows jabbing into the throat. It helps. Plus if you know how to say throat I am sure you can read it, its usually in kana on the package "no do" Good luck, hope you get your voice back.

aah your class sounds much like the class i had to sit through when i did exchange in high school. we had spit/tape wads thrown about, girls tweezing arm hair during class, and at least 10 kids passed out. but it was a school where most of the girls appeared in such magazines as Egg or Ego System (have you seen those?) Have fun getting smashed. Remember, don't keitai and drink at the same time. You might sent out some regretable mails.

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened...your friend is lucky to have someone like you there for her.

About the kids, EVERY one of my friends, including myself, feels the way you do. The students don't care, so it makes you not want to care either...HOwever, what makes me happy? Reaching ONE student, whether it's just getting them to say "hello" to me or whatnot....it's such an amazing reward! I've learned not to expect to much....so I'll never be disappointed. =P
Posted 9/1/2003 at 5:57 am by midori031

It was so sweet of you to be there for your friend.

You're making me feel better about working for Nova when you talk about your class. All i had to work with today was 4 students who laughed at all my stupid jokes. But then again, they're paying big bucks to be entertained by my talking monkey self.
Posted 9/1/2003 at 9:50 am by KittyinJapan

I'm very sorry to hear about what happened... but as stated above, your friend is very lucky to have you be there for her.

About the school situation, sometimes, you just have to not expect too much so you don't stress yourself out. I can't relate to your situation as I have not even started classes yet (I don't know where all the English teachers went cuz I am left alone in the teacher's room right now)... but I try not to set any expectations so that the little things are more rewarding. :)

hi. you don't know me but i'll be going to japan in about a month to teach english. thanks for your insight. This particular entry was interesting. Esp about Emi who doesn't even blink an eye when introducing herself as a hostess. I'm eager to unravel the mystery that is japan.
Posted 9/6/2003 at 3:56 pm by midori_lotus

oh my..

japan has like the worst influx of pornography & host/hostess clubs..in the us, one might see a store like that at a seedy or some designated area in the city..but one can easily bump into those part-time flier distributer handing out, ahem, naked images brandishing their just-around-the-corner mise
Posted 9/7/2003 at 6:38 pm by citydrifter

too bad for you....now you gotta be selective as to which hostess bars you go to. =P hmmmm...actually this might work to your advantage. Next class, ask Emi if she gives discounts!

Goblin goods

There's this thing about Clancy novels, where the 1000+ pages aren't anything of a difficulty to get through. It's really quite wicked. Oh, and if you get to marry that daughter of a rich-assed industrialist, that would be called "gyaku-tama" or "gyaku-tama-no-koshi".

玉の輿(たまのこし)refers to a situation when a woman marries into a rich ass family. 逆玉の輿, as it is insighted in the term, is the opposite (gyaku)... hence; man marrying into a rich family. Figures, huh? Oh, and when you do... throw the sister my way, so I can have my gyaku-tama! hehehe.

And in case I forget (which I likely will... what with all this "I can't find a fucking job" stint...) Happy Birthday, dude. I'll be 24 in December... damn... we're almost at that QUARTER CENTURY MARK. How fucking exciting *sarcasm*.

Shag tag

and amazingly after all that you're more than halfway comprehensible... though I'm still trying to figure, why the Real World?! I'm sure you could have come up with a better analogy than THAT. *hmm* Par chance, non?

Anyway, sounds like JET isn't a half-bad job, if it pays to do jack shit (as you would probably say) and even get to go out as often as all of you do. Perhaps I should finish school--at some fucking point--and give this JET thing a whirl... And hopefully somewhere near my work's office... so I can take on 2 bull shit jobs! ^_^ *hehehe*

Wonder if the company will send me to Japan to do anything... ... ... that'd be kind of nice. Haven't been back in a good while. :p

Well, don't drink too much... ... ... ... ... fuck that. Drink to your heart's desire. Just make sure you can get yourself up to do the more important stuff in life... like that great sale thing you've mentioned here.

being on JET feels like being on the Real World? I totally agree. It won't get any better than this...hahahah

love the gallery of pictures you got up there. only thing i gotta question is that last picture of the guy in the see-through shirt. what was he thinking?!?!?

by the way, how do you get around here? I dont' think i'm able to get a JR rail pass cuz I don't even know what kind of visa i have issued to me. I already feel lost and i'm not even there yet. help squash my nerves.

also, there is such thing as a guy who doesn't like dogs like my two-timing ex. i should've listened when my friends thought he looked kinda gay.

the video is waaay cool~
not to mention we are getting an inside look on a reality show here :)

yup..and i tend to philosophize too much but xanga is a great outlet for those rambling thoughts..of course, i dont want to scare my subscribers away nor do i want to join those 'all the words i wish you could feel' blah blah blogrings and torture myself with more random and depressing words..so usually i made the entries private and talk about other incidentals..the more cheery stuff. i hope.

as for the renaming of eprops/comments..my xanga buddy gave me the codes, i can email you the javascripts if you want them..

gah!!! i sympathize dear panda! I have found myself as maybe uh.. an adult. But i must admit, suits are kind of sexy.. not on those old guys on the subway, but on cute people like us. :) so.. can we have a little taste of just how sexy and adult looking you look at work? mm???

ゴメン。共感(きょうかん)できるんだけど、可笑しかった(おかしかった)!

Reminds me of being back in my first year at UCLA, when they were doing reconstruction on Dykstra Hall.... ... ... ... consequently the very fucking dorm I lived in!! 7AM... sharp.... POUNDING OF CONCRETE FOUNDATION. You know, I kept wondering if it was actually safe for me to be on the 8th floor of a 10 floor building, of which the foundation was being cracked by some pounding machinery... Hey, at least it would have given me an excuse for scale diving... ... ... but it would probably hurt without the parachute huh? hahaha.

タクでした。
P.S. no worries on the unposted comments. I just rant about my pseudo-busy schedule... or a life that's full of chaos... ordered chaos... like the Mandelbrot set. Ooh, I haven't played around with calculating that bullshit for a while... ... ... ... ... maybe my next post will be a lecture on the Chaos Theory of Physics. Oh yeah, people will really enjoy that one, huh?

More bike troubles

Okay, I'd laugh at you--as always--but I did that last time, so I'll contain myself today. *hehe*
Alright, so your stolen-constantly-tipped-thrown-into-bushes-by-mysterious-Japanese-men bikes (yours and your friend's)... this experience is what we typically call ‚¢‚₪‚点. You don't have to have pissed anyone off, as it's probably being done by someone who already has a distaste for non-Japanese people... ... ... even people like me. <-(as in that individual or group of them wouldn't like people like me, rather than I have this certain distaste towards certain people... not true... I hate everyone equally... I don't discriminate, I'd do all women if they'd let me... wait, where did that come from??)

So anyway, beyond the tedium of having to bring it up every day... ... ... just bring the damn bike up to your room every day, man. Problem solved. Or beat the shit out of whomever is doing this, get it reported, and guess who wins? Yeah, that fucking Nipponese with the grin on his fucking face, fool! MUWAHAHAHAHA~! (am i beginning to sound like an asshole yet?)

But if you're going to do this whole stakeout thing, let's do this ish right man! Military style, infrared cameras, assault rifle (BB will do), rope, duck tape, something to gag a number of people with, and just for kicks, let's get a parachute pack. Get the evidence, and then shoot him/them (even her), gag 'em, tie 'em, ducktape 'em to the wall... and shoot them some more. And start talking like them professional wresters and stuff... that'll freak them out. From my childhood memories, I can only remember Macho Man (something Savage).. .. .. and the Ultimate Warrior (oh, I met Hulk Hogan once... that dude's huuuuuge!). And if you can, do it in ebonics... it'll be fucking great! make sure you get it on tape, so you can send me a copy and we'll stream it on my server!! lol

Okay, obviously too much time on my hands at work.. ... ... ... no no, I already had a 30 minute conversation with a potential client in Nashville, so I'm pretty much through for the day, ya heard?! And I'm-a-bum around tomorrow and not deal with Halloween traffic, and go out with this one girl... :p hehehe.

Yes, I write a shit load to say something so little, but you have to understand, when there are other people in the office, having a stern look on your face and typing like a maniac makes you look like you're being busy... ... ... then again, being in sales, if I'm not on the phone, it doesn't make me look busy at all! *That's what my boss tells me, at least*

My secretary just bought me lunch. Nice! I'll let you ponder about my ideas on how to get this mysetrious culprate! :p

::taku::
Posted 10/30/2003 at 12:43 pm by takunishi79

Looks like someone has a secret admirer!!

I agree with taku...keep the bike upstairs for awhile, whoevevers messing with you will hopefully get over their issue with you. Besides, beating the shit outta someone after being here for only three months IS NOT a good idea.
Posted 10/30/2003 at 7:59 pm by midori031

I say plant a trap for the rat bastards. The one(s) doing it are doing it in behind your back, which is a full sign of cowardice.

Simply the big bully theory. You see him/her doing it, confront them, maybe have a throw down and then it's over.

Better yet, use your dig. camera and snap a few shots of them doing it first. Now you have hard evidence. Remember what G.I. Joe says "Knowing is half the battle!"

It would be important to get in their face though, coming off polite and jovial will just make them feel that you can be pushed around. If they keep it up, then you can live up to your word and toss them around a few times until they learn.

That seems fair.

It's like this and like that and like this and uh...

hey wow, xanga is working again.

It's Jo's birthday today. I am so dead positively broke right now, I'm afraid I'm going to have to beg cute girls to buy me drinks at the bar. It would be a lot more successful, I'm sure, if I was a cute girl myself. *sigh* We'll see. Maybe if I wear the panda mask...

Ninja panda poses on my (currently spartan) christmas tree.

By the way, Kitty, today is black (I tend to like the dark colors, in case you hadn't noticed). Should I start making this a daily feature on my entries? And for god sakes dear, what about carrying that alarm your mom sent you?

(Don't you just love it when people on blogs start addressing others you've never heard of in the first person as if they're having a personal conversation with them? Sorry folks. Won't happen again.)

Hopefully I'll post something interesting when I get back.

Now listening to: "Eddie Money - Take me home tonight"

Humpday

Damn, you're such a blog tease, you floozy about giving us all glimpses of a totally cool story involving hurled cow feces, then you go all coy and refuse to give it up? Pfft. Also, I've decided to finish the rest of my comment in traditional news reporter format:

This just in: A local panda today was arrested outside the CNN offices apparently trying to give our very own Rudi Bakhtiar a pair of stained, signed panties. Initial reports indicated the panda was drunk and covered in his own feces, but it was later discovered the panda was merely burned out from study overload and covered in cow feces, not his own. Here's Tom with the weather...

Cold day

In such instances, it's best to follow with a *boke* ボケ and a *tsukkomi* ツッコミ。
Per example:

Sort of in that context... Take an instance of criticism and turn it into a joke. Hey, you can make a sort of come back this way too, if teacher B is a 貧乳(ひんにゅう)←Look it up.

マイマイ:「いやぁ〜、けどこれだけ脂肪分がると、先生より胸がある見たいで申し訳ないですよねぇ〜・・・アハハ・・・ハハハ」
Bさん:*激怒*

Ah~, it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship! (-_-;)

enjoy.

dottie's dumplign dowry opened up a few months ago. i heard it was super popular back then? anyway, i ate there a few weeks ago with R when I was CRAVING a hamburger. they were ok, though. a little too on the lean side, if you ask me.

Posted 11/25/2003 at 1:22 am by jubeichan00

Here in xanga, the land of rotating skull anime gif backgrounds and fuschia text we should applaud the panda for his elegant web design skills. I for one happen to like this scheme as it is. But that's just me, easily satisfied by legibility...

You should have fun with your bilingual nature by making cryptic, confusing statements to people making fun of you. For instance, when you busted those teachers making fun of your weight, the correct response would have been "I maintain this robust physique by eating the souls of unbelievers!" or "I just can't turn down ham!" It may not make you any friends, but it should keep things interesting down at the old learnin' hole

Posted 12/7/2003 at 6:35 pm by midori031

Pfft, I'm not gonna feel sorry for you, you're kicking ass and winning showdowns with shady Japanese organizations. Hell, they should base an action TV series on your exploits. You could ride around on a motorbike from town to town solving mysteries, busting up drug rings and generally kicking ass.
Some titles I've been working with:
Panda: The Legendary Journies
Bamboo Vengeance
and: Bad as I wanna be: The Dennis Rodman story.
There might be some copyright issues with that last one though...

Off to Tokyo

while i would like to think i pack light, i don't. :(

what size timbuk2 is that? the xl? is it comfortable?

chrome bags look cooler becuase they have that seatbelt buckle strap, but hella $$.

i was thinking of getting a timbuk2 bag for school, but decided not to. i am so sick of backpacks. and my dickies messenger. uncomfortable. and only holds like 850 cubic inches. not enough room for laptop!

have fun in Tokyo!! :)

hahah - I don't know who that is on the bill either - but I learned of Soseki's picture on the 1000 yen note after playing "Guess Who" with my students. :P

Once again, you've made me terrify my housemates with insane cackling, did you ever find out why she wanted you to lug all that crazy shit for her?

Incidently, I'm down with the House Of Panda. I'd suggest we get cool phat pants, learn some break dance moves and hit the streets. But it occured to me that I'm very lazy and uncoordinated which would make being badass quite hard. I guess I'll just have to be happy reading your blog in my ordinary, non be-phatted pants....

oh well...

Poor panda, you work in the fifth circle of hell, but I suspec you live far beyond the Malebolge, deep inside Cocytus (God, that sounds vaguely sexual) on the river of ice, right next to Satan's huge legs and chilly testicles...

Don't go down the path of eating the fancy instant noodles. I developed a taste for them and only choose to buy the outrageously priced 50 cent brand (that being the price of the noodle, not an endorsement by shitty rappers), and always take shit for it... I know it's just more expensive shit, but it's my shit, so back off!

haha japanese ATMs... when i stopped over in tokyo last (last?) summer ('02) for a couple of days on my way to hk, i was yen-less. everyone was telling me to just use my credit card (better exchange rates) and even when i tried to exchange some green bills for some yen, the bank told me i had to pre-order it! so here i come to japan with no money, thinking that maybe i can just get some money from the ATM there, but nooo.. those ATMs are very selective and didn't warm up to my Bank of America card... but it was all good in the end- my japanese friend took care of me so i was well clothed, fed, and roofed. blesss him.

Any bank stupid enough to put a doddering old man in charge of the ATM (assuming theft of one is possible), probably isn't smart enough to keep the fucking thing stocked with cash, or so the criminal mind thinks. And that is the true security that the old man brings... That and he has super powers... Or so I assume

you know, i was in kyoto a couple weeks ago and noticed that in one intersection, there were only three traffic signals...surely that doesn't make sense because you need 4 traffic signals for a 4 way intersection...well, they had employed 2 traffic guys for the 4th signal - go figure...employment for all, eh?

yeah, the ATM thing really gets me. PLUS didja know that they charge you 105 yen to take money out on the weekends?

the other day, i took out 450,000 yen ($5500 cnd, $4200 US) FROM THE BANK MACHINE - ALL AT ONCE! don't think the 100 year old guard will be much help if someone robs me...

What would be worse would be dying before you could eat the sticky dumpling/vacuum it from your throat, and having all the paraphernalia strewn about your corpse, it'd certainly make for an interesting photo shoot for the police photographer at any rate...

Incidently, you have now become my sole source of entertaining AND informative writing. Once I'm done listening about Japan, I'm going to need you to inflitrate the infamous piracy rings of south east asia. It all sounds pretty cool, plus I think an eye patch, fake beard and parrot would really help you with the ladies

A tragic turn...

oh wow!! @_@!! I am terribley sorry for your loss. That so sad-- It really makes you think. You know, make you think about taking things for granted or think about life more.. i don't know. I just know when I first found out my friend was going to commit suicide I was shocked and thought it over.. all those signs. like you, i brushed them off. usually i dont do that to my friends but she wasn't really someone close to me at the time. but later i talked to her all the time and just let her vent out her things to me.. and end of the year she told me thanks and that she wouldn't be here if it wasnt for me. i thought that was giving me too much credit. but it just made me realize some things.

thanks for the insight on turning 18. ahaha really i just think of it as a really big number. i didn't realize i was turning 18 x.x; im scared cause i don't know what i will be doing by then. i dont want to stay here in alaska anylonger but i dont know if i will make it outside of this house. bleh.

oh, i changed the layout x.x; because of some difficulities involving some other's person's layout. if you read the comments under that entry about 'eating a soda' lols. ~.~ i dislike having the same layout.. and someone happen to have the same background and things.. and everyone even said it looked like mine. and im just a layout obessesor so i needed to change it quick! ^_^ and thats the story.

vatttt.. you don't like miyavisan? ^^; do you listen to j-rock? aha now i must head off and get ready for school =[ didn't get one bit of sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Posted 1/5/2004 at 9:01 am by chiriyuku

Sorry to hear about your friend. My sympathies.

About the FOMA. No, I didn't had a FOMA phone. I had a regular J-Phone account with a Toshiba phone. My friend had a FOMA phone. I've played with the phone for a while. It's impressive technology! Dual camera so that you are actually able to do 'netmeeting' on the move. The phone itself is a bit bulky, but good quality. I say... take a FOMA phone if your friends/colleagues are using one too, so that you can use the video conference. Or wait till I made my move to Japan ;)

A similar thing happened to one of my old friends this year. Your probably right about the double standard between men and women in today's society. Things like "take your daughter to work day" just don't exist for guys. Anyway, your entry was very well written and Im sorry for your loss.

thanx for the link btw.. i did take a look.. and i came across another site.. www.kawaiigifts.com yes i was bored. hehe.
Posted 1/6/2004 at 4:18 am by schapagurl

It's natural to feel as if you could have done more, and that may or may not be true, but it's one thing to want to help someone and actually being able to.

Even though you couldn't save him, you were a positive influence in his life. And in this day and age, when that kind of thing is a rarity for even the most stable of people, that kind of thing is a greater gift than you realise.

On the topic of web/image hosting, I can host some stuff for you for a while until you set everything back up again. Drop me a line if you need it

You should be awarded this year's prestigious "Golden babyface award" for your effort to rid that poor man of his fu manchu moustache extravaganza...

Bad facial hair, along with our such hair faux pas' as the Mullet have plagued mankind since the dawn of time. With your help, we can see an end to people with ugly heads in our lifetime!

i agree with you regarding asian men and facial hair - they just shouldn't do it. i try to talk my best friend out of it...and if he happens to read this comment, sorry darling, it just doesn't suit you...

great way of going about telling the teacher to trim it a bit...should have told him that less facial hair makes men look young and attractive!

Students learn a naughty word

this blog is funny! yes japanese can talk like that and sound so naive and v funny. i watched in cartoon network this series called once upon a time in japan-the girl kept saying there, tonari no kaka daio-because the guy keeps going to her house mistaking it for his-and of course kaka means wife right? and it looked so funny but i know that for us gaijins it would put a totally new meaning.

hey we have the same camera except mine is colored silver :-d

awww so you know what to provide m now when she visits!

THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD! Japanese people are always saying funny stuff like that. I remember I was talking to this girl who use to tutor me in japanese. I was telling her about how I used to be a heavy ciggarette smoker. I asked her if she ever smoked a ciggarette and she said only when she is constipated. I told her I couldnt believe she just said that to me and she turned red and started mumbling to herself.
Posted 1/10/2004 at 11:49 pm by ddsb2000

ahahaha that is so funnny. cheese is gooooooooood. x.x; my obsession. puahaha. gyaaa i would hate to be in that position. bill clinton aaaaaahaha

why do you have nothing to do till febuary? do they get a month off? >_>

well its sad. while the teachers just expect answers out of the smart students, the not as qualified ones are sitting there not having any one giving them a "hand" into improving their skills. wahtever! i hate school =] gluck with your teaching! aaahhahaa that story up there is just too funny ^_^

i couldn't stop laughing...i can just see this happening...i hope this will never happen to me - but maybe the junior high kids know all this already...

even as a us citizen, i've never had velveeta as far as i've know.

maybe you could start importing it and marketing it as aphrodisiac or something! a good way to supplement your funds. :)
Posted 1/11/2004 at 2:11 pm by momolo

I'm really hoping i never ever utter these words, "And that is how my students learned the word "cock" today."
God that was a good story though and now i'm typing in your font for some mysterious reason. I like that word j-bird, a british-japanese hyrbrid.... but me being a gaijin i need no tips the women shall flock to me like... pidgeons to... some... food?

Snow falling on pandas

Snow!!! Send some over here! Wouldve liked to see the snow panda!

Ugh! Geometry wasnt so bad back in high school, but I could never do proofs *yuck!*, no matter how hard I tried.

Toilet roll paper in the classroom??? Hmmm... mysterious indeed! *hehehe*

i also hated proofs...

IT'S SNOWING TOO MUCH! why haven't they closed down the schools yet and sent everyone home? it's too miserable out there (hehehe - we're such whiners, us west coaster canadians)...you thought last night was bad...today is HORRIBLE...

Geometry is useless anyway, I mean how often do find yourself using geometry anyway? No, schools are wasting kids time these days with useless subjects like English, Science and "How not to blow yourself up 101", when they could be teaching them stuff that they really need.
It's not until "Pandology" is taught in every classroom that we will see any kind of change for the better...

Diary of mistar yukipanda

i have to mention that you very dashing in your previous entry's photo, despite the snow!

today, the wind chill was WAY below zero...luckily global warming has prevented it from snowing very much so i just froze a lot.

biking in the winter sucks. i just seem to get so much slower!!

haha, good luck on your TPR mysteries. maybe you should just take them home "for a rainy day." :)
Posted 1/23/2004 at 1:30 am by momolo

Hah, shared a similar bike and snow incident myself this morning. Let me try to help you with the TP problem. I noticed the same thing at my school but it seemed rather plausible to me that it was used for runny noses and of course cleaning makeup. I noticed kids have them in their bag too and I've seen them wipe their noses a lot with it(of course not actually blow, meaning lots of tissue is used repeatedly). That or it's a new form of getting high that I'm completely in the dark on, but need to know soon =)
Posted 1/23/2004 at 7:03 am by kirinknight

darn! we don`t get that much snow in gifu! I really want it to snow lots but it hasn`t so far hmmph. It snowed last night but... that`s it. i wish i live in kanazawa........eh? that`s where you`re from right?

First, I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to give me some input on my situation. I really appreciate it!! ^_^

I've heard (at least that's what I heard) it's been snowing everywhere in Japan except here in Ibaraki - the sun is actually out today for some strange reason, but it's still quite cold (guess at least during the afternoon, we're not in the negatives) - but I hope the *blizzard* will be over soon!

And well, about the TP issue... heheh... ^_~

Posted 1/23/2004 at 10:28 pm by siberian_miri

You know, last time I bought Asahi beer out here in Aus, it came in these nifty, bottle sized bottles. Not those teeny tiny cans of yours. What the hells going on? Does Japan keep the good stuff at home and portion it out in tiny sips and send the swill oversea's for us foreign devils to choke down? Cos I'm OK with that if that's what they're doing.

You and your buddies seem so damn clean cut when you drink. Sure you're having a good time and all, but where is the dude with vomit on his chin? Where's the photo of the girl who's fallen out of her top and hasn't noticed yet?

You should be commended for your coherent drunkenness, it is a rare talent indeed

I wish I could celebrate V day in Japan! So much more interesting! I spent my V day buying a KDK fan with my dad for the living room!!! hahaha

So watcha planning to give your gf for White Day?;p

Well..I'm not sure what hemp beads are... but we make use of a lot of semi-precious stuff stuff(most popular and most expensive hahaha), alphabet beads, fimo beads, bone beads, metal beads, porcelain, swarovski crystal, glass,clay,wooden..tons..you get the idea. haha I 've practically never done any necklace-making whatsoever (materials are expensive and I guess I was plain lazy hahaha) but hey, I like my job. I actually get to sit down ,sure my hands are moving and my eyes feel a little tired but it's so much better than standing up and folding and refolding clothes(as is done in clothing shops). And we don't even have to check stock or anything. LoL

Long comment,aye?;D

Man, it sounds like you got a pretty sweet deal out of this years Valentine's day. Panda shaped chocolate? No one's ever given me panda shaped chocolate before... Although once I received a giant chocolate monkey, which is about the coolest thing in the world...

I've read a book entitled "Chaos" which was oddly enough, about chaos theory and possibly the book that you yourself read. What captivated me about chaos theory (bearing in mind before any concept remotely to do with mathematics served as a cheap tranquiliser) was the simple notion that approximately accurate data didn't always lead to approximately accurate results. It doesn't seem like much, but the implications of the idea really captivated me...

Panda chocolate = adorable. : ) Rah! Another bio/genetics person. Did you have to take chemistry in college? I love bio, but hate chem with equal passion.

Um... "Subjunctive"? Whassat? The only grammar terms I know are "verb", "noun", "adjective" and "present/past/future tense". I could take you up on your offer, but your students would probably end up speaking even worse English than they do now. ^^U

ps: Just out of curiosity -- why are you teaching English in Japan with a bio/genetics major? ::blur look::

pps: You've never heard Song 2 before this?! Shockhorrorgasp. :D

Gum, taxis and confused panda

Looked like u guys had a fab time!

That was a really strange way the other teachers decided to handle that student who passed out. I hope he or she is now all right Hmmm... interesting.
Posted 2/24/2004 at 10:41 am by anjuliet

Those teachers are the product of the Japanese education system... they really don't know how to deal with shit. Seriously. They don't. It's really quite sad. Their concerns are with rules and regulations... it's the only way they know how to function--especially in small towns, I've found.

Then again, what the fuck can I say... I'm not Japanese, per se. I understand them, but I don't... their utter disregards for certain things... it annoys the hell out of me. And they keep wondering why the world has negative views on them... it's not all bad, certainly, but good lord... have some sense!! As I'm certain you were thinking as well.

Ain't life grand?!

Okay, back to studying.. .. .. I'm really not back to getting in habit of studying.........
Posted 2/24/2004 at 6:35 pm by takunishi79

the sad thing is my dad once lectured me on defenestrate... i believe to fenestrate means to install windows. bah..

i'm jealous of your partying. have you talked to saitama tomodachi about crashing?

i thought more about the taxi thing. i remember being told by my japanese prof that taxi drivers (and other public transportation drivers) are not supposed to wake a person that has passed out inside their vehicle, but instead wait until that person has woken up on their own. so what if said parental figure wasn't home? that poor kid would be dying inthat taxi cab with a driver just standing there! to be honest i'd be absolutely more freaked out to be home/in taxi then in a hospital when i woke. at least i knew that someone was properly caring for me after whatever happened. rar... this is too long of a comment. i should've just called.
Posted 2/26/2004 at 1:17 pm by KittyinJapan

Haha, I love the second photo!
Posted 2/26/2004 at 5:10 pm by momolo

i would've done some CPR on the poor kid and order one of the teachers to administer mouth to mouth resuscitation!
Posted 2/26/2004 at 5:42 pm by HighWindNY

What the FUCK?? First of all when the hell did gum become magical?? And how is it a good idea to send a passed oul little girl all alone with a strange taxi driver. I am seriously hoping that they sent someone with the little girl. Anyway good party pics sha!
Posted 2/26/2004 at 10:13 pm by ddsb2000

Hehe, be thankful they didn't just hand her a stick of gum and send her on her way...

I think avoiding medical attention transcends nationalities. After a rather huge night drinking, a friend of mine noticed traces of blood in his vomit. Rather than let us take him to the hospital he decided somehow that chicken noodle soup would help him. When his girlfriend decided to call an ambulance without his permission, he had the gall to tell her off.

Also: gum has a laxative effect. Chewing too much of it while sick is liable to send you lunging for the toilet bowl. Which is something you don't want to be doing if you've got dizzy spells, I can assure you.

Posted 3/4/2004 at 12:10 am by BooBooKittyFk

Jeez I don't get how you stay so sharp on your english vocabulary while your in japan! You must read quite a bit. Or you just got a knack for it. But whats this? Sandra Bullock?? You like them really skinny girls dont ya. Yeah you do. That risa girl is skinny too. Haha skinny girls are alright but I really like short busty blond haired girls with high pitched voices. Haha.

But I know how You feel about people coming in and out of your life and how it feels when someone you really click with leaves.

Anyway luckily my dog is only gonna be in the kennel for like 2 days so it should be alright.

Awwww, it's soooo nice to make good friends with them and continue keeping in touch with them. Special friends like that matter. Some friends you just know you'll always end up keeping in touch with and knowing forever......

this should be fun!!!
Posted 3/4/2004 at 1:23 pm by amelie_mello

oh the emo site was fun. sadly, i found that i dress a bit like that. hahaha. nerdy glasses and all. no studded belt yet, but i've been eyeing them for a long time.

i'm so glad that you also have had occassion to use the "douche". haha not literally, of course. it's bad for women, i can only imagine what it would be for men. EEP!

ok...since it said in my blog today that i was hungry, i'm DEFINITELY hungry now because i haven't left to eat yet. gah. *mumbles and runs off*
Posted 3/4/2004 at 2:03 pm by amelie_mello

Currently your pictures aren't working, so I sadly, I've been deprived of the pictorial that went along with this blog. Instead, I had to imagine what pictures you might have deemed appropriate to post, and if you were doing what I suspect you were doing in those pictures... don't...

On a serious note, I can understand a little of the feeling you're talking about here. People's lives have a way of twisting and turning when you least expect it, and if you somehow manage to reconnect with old friends, your confronted with old feelings of camaraderie but in (sometimes) vastly different settings. It's like you have one foot in both worlds: the past and the present. No wonder your brain hurts: Playing perceptual twister is bound to split your pants sooner or later

I've been a sleepy bear too! I think it's the change in seasons.

Anywhere is good for spring break!

For your malaise and discontent, I would take a step back. Just teach to teach. If you think of what it means, it's going to pull you down. Being lost is ok, as long as you know that you will pull out of it somehow.

I'm kind of disturbed that this was posted at 11:01PM on Wednesday...seeing as it's only 8:25AM on Wednesday here. These things never cease to disturb and amaze me. I know, I know...I'm a goof and a simpleton.

However, what is more disturbing is the fact that I'm awake, functioning, and not even at my house at this moment. *sigh* Meetings with professors at 8:45 are horrible and I don't recommend them to anyone (especially on your day off )

Breaking up.

There's rarely any advice that can be offered to lessen the pain when things fall apart. Itcan only be so much harder for you, stuck in a city that feels slightly less than welcoming.

Things are different between Japanese people and westerners, but you're a great person man, a fucking rarity in any culture. If your girl let the weight of society force you apart she made a big mistake. It's probably no comfort to you now, but you're much better being with someone who can handle such superficial, socially cosmetic differences...

I can't wait for my student days to be over; but like you, I think I will miss the (false?) sense of routine and progression that the lifestyle has lured me into.

I know how that is-you kill yourself with "busy" that you just hope you can drop to your bed and be very sleepy at the end of the day because sleeping is the hardest thing to do at these times...when love is just starting or should I say a relationship is just starting, we see all the good things in it-it's all enlarged and when its ending or when we want it to end we see all the bad things in it enlarged....cest la vie

Sorry your trip got cancelled they better not take out another $600 next month! Mind you, my mom said that most of the apartments in L.A.-- they would want something like almost $2000 upfront -first and last month's rent what I like about it is most of the time the basic utilities are free

Point Cards

Ahh haha hey. Good stuff ! So funny! I want a point card ^^:I love to read about stuff in japan. Well the students and my teacher came back from Japan..And they didn't seem too happy. They said it was an "interesting trip" :/ whatever that means.. but I think its cause they had so little time and my teacher went to go see all this historical buildings, so they had to do alot of walking. They said Tokyo is amazing though *_* haha With all they're high tech items &_& And they said they have vending machines lined up whereever you go...wonderful *gleams* lol. Where are you located right now? Well you better save up those point cards! Baii~

hmmm no point card machines here, but i believe sapporo does have drink vending machines with tvs that *supposivly* are like tv phones that connect you with someone who can give you advice about things/places to see in the city... i also remember an article in japanese class about vending machines that you could order drinks from using your phone and the money was charged to your phone bill or something whacky like that.. but alas.. in my experience i've only had the regular vending machine of drinks/booze/and panties.

I've played around with the idea of teaching English in Japan after I graduate. I've heard so much about the stages that foreigners usually go through in Japan. I know I'd be completely amazed and overawed if I ever made it there. And if I got to the stage of seeing past the facade as you have, I don't know if I'd have the guts to point it out to people. I think it's a really important thing to do and I admire you for it, but people hate having their cosy illusions shattered. And especially in Japan, it seems.

I sort of feel aimless too at the moment, but like you I'm trying to see it as a positive thing - "my own personal spring" - I like that .

Fleeting, beautiful blossoms poorly concealing the jagged scars of concrete and steel in the sky. Maybe the soul of Japan is laid bare in those blossoms a little more than you might think.

Such stalwart, unshakeable xenophobia must be terrible to deal with, but I find it so hard to believe that even the most rigid of cultures would blind people so.

At the end of the day, anyone unable to see you for the kind of great person you are, regardless of the cultural barriers they face are weak and blind, end of story.

I hope you feel better again soon man, because quite often it's not enough just to avoid sadness
Posted 4/10/2004 at 11:45 am by Paracetamol

thank you for the picture, i really love it.

and now i'm a bit disillusioned about japan. i have the opportunity and a great offer to teach in japan next year but i'm a bit scared for many reasons...most dominately, i don't speak japanese...except i learned how to say "noodles" about 12 years ago when my best friend's brother went to japan for some sort of baseball tournament.

*sigh* things are better on my end though. i'm coming out of my little "funk" if you will. my mom is coming to visit me today (on her way right now) and we're going to the lake and maybe to grandma's house. i'm just glad to get out of my little college town and forget about university and all of its hellish ways.
Posted 4/10/2004 at 1:37 pm by amelie_mello

Err hi, you dont know me but ^^;;, the first time I went to Japan I guess I was into that first phase, but by the third visit I hated going out unless I was with friends. I look 99.9% Japanese but when I tell someone that im actually a gaikokujin, the change that comes over them was at first amusing and remarkable...yet now annoys the hell outta me.
They just keep smiling serenely but its easy to tell they want to get away as fast as possible. Sometimes I get this deep urge to just shake them and tell me what exactly their thinking so at least that way we can actually move on? We wont be stuck in this state of "Im Japanese and your not we're too different from you, so end of conversation". I love Japan and I actually enjoy being around people that dont take notice of me all the time, because of my different coloured skin or whatever, since I was raised in a city where the ratio of "white" to asian was about 13:1.
I always took the multi-culturism in North America for granted, but im appreciating it like hell now.
hmm I think I typed a lil' too much -_______- neways ciao _ _V

Very well written! At this point, I feel that I am enjoying my time here to the fullest and if that means having more than a few hanamis....I'm all for it =) heheeh

Dude! You listen to Nil Laura!

I had totally forgotten that there must be other people who do so.

Very well thought-out post. Isn't it ironic how you start by denying the religious revelation of the cherry blossoms, and conclude by surrendering to the phenomenon? It does seem that way.

it's so...depressing to think about getting old. 18 year olds are now telling me that they "like older women". what's up with that? i am NOT an older woman...let's reserve that comment for the 30+ women out there.

i wish i could wait until 30 to get married as well...but it just isn't socially acceptable for a woman to wait that long. *sigh* AND, apparently they're less desirable. men of the same age are still looking for that 25 year old (or younger). i'm destined to get married before then, but i will NOT have children until 30 (at the earliest!!).

your panda mane still seems plentiful to me, i would never think that you were balding in any way shape or form.
Posted 4/14/2004 at 1:49 pm by amelie_mello

p.s. is "mane" even the correct term for a panda?
Posted 4/14/2004 at 1:50 pm by amelie_mello

Wow. First of all, I've always been obsessed by hands, and didn't really know why. Maybe the way you've described them is part of the reason. Secondly, there have been several times when I've had that feeling: the recognition of my mortality; although I am still far too scared of that thought to write about it as you have (although I obviously wouldn't use the losing-hair thing to write about it. And also, not all men go bald!) And thirdly: this post is poignant and very thought-provoking. Thank you for writing it .

Re. your comments: the tree photo is a digital camera photo which was taken from behind a window, so it's not of the best quality, and has some window frame in the shot. But if you want me to try and email it to you or whatever, you're welcome to have it . And re. 24 - I haven't watched the 2nd series yet, but I think the concept is that it carries on for a second day, the next 24 hours following the first series. It's a brilliant show (and very addictive) .

I like this piece very much. Perhaps in part because it strikes a cord in me. After all, who doesn't occasionally look forward, and see the inevitable?

I don't know how women realise that they're getting older (yet, eh?). Perhaps you realise that those in-between-meals snacks are going somewhere. Perhaps your relatives start talking about some "biological clock" ticking away. Then again, perhaps its as simple as seeing younger women and thinking, "That used to be me."

I suppose we'll have to wait and find out, eh?

How horrible.

"I wonder how it must be like when you grow to the age when rather than postponing personal goals, you have to start accepting that you will never accomplish such things before you die?"

25 isn't that old! Stop paying attention to statistics. They contain SOME truth but not all.

I definitely get angry though, when I hear people say that they're too old to do something. My mom says it sometimes and she's not even 50! It's definitely a societal thing where people panic and feel useless after certain points in their lives, becuase I don't think it's true. Everyone can do something and learn something new if they want. The point is that you're not learning it to be a new person, but to learn it becuase you WANT to. There is no "Learn english : ages 0-30" or anything official like that.

I like the way your hair is looking of late. Pretty cool!

Panda gets run over by a car

oh Michael, oh daijine...

and hey I'm glad I dont get errors in your site anymore

take care ok?
Posted 4/20/2004 at 11:10 am by costoso

i'm truly sorry for laughing throughout your blog. you write with such whimsy about being struck by a car. mine would be a rambling mess of self-pity and would undoubtedly cause a tear in the eye of my readers. hehehe. ok, not really. i'm sorry about your bike though and your panda head. i hope you're recovering quite nicely!! by the by, it really messes me up that it's not even noon on tuesday here and your blog says it's wednesday. i think i've mentioned that before....ok, i really need to do some homework here. ta ta for now!
Posted 4/20/2004 at 12:39 pm by amelie_mello

OMG! Accident! OMG! Glad you weren't too hurt. Hope you're feeling ok. Perhaps you should go to the hospital and・・in case you have concussion?・・Poor Panda.
Posted 4/20/2004 at 4:54 pm by pookybearcheung

Eek, how dramatic! Glad you're not injured .

Margaret Atwood is one of my favourite writers so I rushed out and bought Oryx and Crake as soon as it was realised - and absolutely loved it. I was really frustrated though, because I had no one to talk about it to. I have since coerced several of my friends into reading it to solve that problem

Posted 4/20/2004 at 5:23 pm by moritheil

Aiks. How are you doing now?

Have never actually been in an accident, but have been in a number of near-accidents. My bad, usually, for not paying proper attention when crossing roads. Ahaha. ^^U

Have you gotten a new bike yet? It must be quite inconvenient without one. I can't ride a bicycle myself, so I know! Sad, sad. (._.)
Posted 4/21/2004 at 1:46 am by tchamster

wow man thats messed up that those girls didnt even give you a ride home. that stinks man. well at least know you got a good story to tell the next time you get drunk. good luck with your transportation. if i were you i would get those girls to buy a new bike.

i got hit by a car 3 times during my time here in japan. it seems like every jet i know got hit by a car sometime during their time here. it must be in our contracts that we're required to have that happen at least once.

Oh my freaking god! You got HIT BY A CAR! Were you wearing helmet? Holy shit, you just lost like a million brain cells...BUY A HELMET BECUASE I BET YOU WEREN"T WEARING ONE!

But I am glad that you're ok for the most part. And nice movie thing! What did you do that on?
Posted 4/22/2004 at 1:14 pm by momolo

glad you're OK. Since you're OK , I found your little accident really funny! hahaha. I heard that in Japan, when someone hits you, you apparently HAVE to go to the police station and the guy who hit you'll have to buy you a new bike (according to friend who was hit by a van LoL). At least you get a new bike

I was involved in only one accident ,some dumb van didn't see moi and my bike was retarded (imagine cycling all over Japan squeking like a rubber toy). And then the other time...I actually fell down a drain..the drain accident was really all my fault. Sometimes I wonder how dumb I can be (who other than myself would try to cycle over a small drain? ) baka deshou?

Posted 4/27/2004 at 5:38 am by KittyinJapan

Still, even despite the polluted and crappy conditions of the beach, being near a large body of water is always exciting!

How warm is it there? I don't think I would even frolick around in 55 F degree weather...

I was thinking about taking Japanese next semester...maybe do some JET? Haha, I don't know.

I need to fix my bike.

I'm glad to hear that you're not dead or anything like that! Sorry about the bustness of Golden Week...

About the food thing: If you are thinking of visiting the US for a bit, we're going to have a room open at my apartment! Or you can sleep on the porch. Do they sell good hammocks in Japan? We need one since my roomie Elena owns ours and is leaving.

And since I am sort of near Regent, roomie Puffer has a car, and we're near a good busline, we can go on a Super Madison Non-stop Maimai Fantasy Food Orgy!

What would have made that festival totally cool would have been if the floats were soaked in gasoline, set alight, and forcibly pulled through the streets by screaming locals. That way everyone would eventually be happy for the rain, it helping to put out their burning town and all...

i just had a random memory and thought it was appropriate to share with you.

in second grade we had a showcase, if you will, on endangered species. well, i wanted so badly to be a panda....so i was. i had a little panda mask on a popsicle stick and gave a little speech about pandas. hehehe good times.

I saw some panda goodies in a little shop called "Girl Heaven" in town the other day and I thought of you! Was thinking about getting you a little panda goodie, but I think they would have been a bit too gay for a macho panda like you.

Pandas pandas... i have a whole lot of panda junk at home because, for some weird reason or other, people thought i love tare panda when i was younger. bleh. nothing against 'your kind' , i just don't particularly like foreign objects on my bed

hello future trillion-dollar man whore,
there is a very simple explanation for everything (except about your students). i have a Kyocera SL300R. the lens rotates like the coolpix ones so you can take pics of yourself. but when you do that... the image is up-side-down.. hence funky placing of time/date.
if you are in need of a mama-san for your man-whoring, i'm free most of the week..

Isn't it sad to see that your pupils haven't learned anything new while you are working your ass off?
Posted 5/26/2004 at 11:25 am by Kittos

ugg my comment goes erased! anyways ..

Kawaii pandas desune! haha. Good luck with makign your exams ^o^ Sorry its so rainy and grey there. haha even though I like that.

Your an exception! Only pages that load slow that have good quality pictures and detailed desciptions can quailify! ahaha Besides yours doesn't even load slow! Thats why I love your page cause you have good pictures and wonderful things about Japan. It doesn't take me long to do a layout for xanga thats why I can make one so easily. And plus xanga only allows certain kinds of html so there's not that much to choose from. Anyways, how many panda stuff do you actually have? haha
Posted 5/28/2004 at 2:50 am by chiriyuku

if we don't own stuffed animals, can we barter with velveeta?
Posted 5/30/2004 at 2:24 pm by momolo

i believe Japanese is making the Designers really rich with their mania for this over expensive things

can i have one of those pandas you've been keeping?
Posted 6/1/2004 at 11:01 am by costoso

you have been nominated for Mr Xanga, well done!

Posted 6/1/2004 at 9:05 pm by moritheil

I always associate bari bari with the sound of something like a machine or with japanese hard work. But that is some good man whore money. Mabye youd make a good he bitch. haha
Posted 6/3/2004 at 4:22 pm by ddsb2000

sorry, didn't actually read any of your entries (I been on xanga all day. brain hurts), but just browsing through your pics, I saw the Super Famicon Adventure. I remember removing little plastic protrusions from my US Super Nintendo so I could play Famicom games from Japan. You might've mentioned that in your entry. Anyway, that's hardcore, sawing your US game catridge to play on the Japanese system. I respect that kind of passion. I'll check back on another day and actually read an entry. ^^

haha, I agreed with the 'Sexy panda looking off into the distance' picture, till I saw that huge non-sexappealing cardboard box strapped on your back ^_^;
Posted 6/6/2004 at 7:55 am by Kittos

Hehe. You never know, it might catch on. (Toilet Backpacks, coming to a catwalk near you).

I love that book, and all of Milan Kundera's stuff that I've read. He's brilliant.
Posted 6/6/2004 at 8:41 am by random_pixie

That's a terrific book you're reading. In fact, I wrote a review of it a couple of years back, when I was trying for the impossible goal of reviewing everything I read, heard, and watched. One day I hope to do that again, but real life calls, too. :)

Posted 6/6/2004 at 3:46 pm by irisetofall

sorry to point this out mike - why didn't you guys just take a taxi back? i know you had the bikes...but the toliet seems so heavy!

i am so lost without victoria's! that's our favorite sunday lunch hangout! i am so sad it's gone! :( :(
Posted 6/6/2004 at 7:45 pm by laughterhere

You are aware my friend, that you're living the kind of marvellously surreal experiences chumps like me can only dream about. Also, I don't know how you managed it, but you some how managed to look rock star while hauling a toilet around like a backpack...

Funny, Keith Richards promised me I'd never have to utter that sentence again...

On another note, I think I'll have to check out The Unbearable Lightness of Being, it sounds pretty awesome

You do enjoy ironing don't you Panda? Kelloggs Special K with red berries is readily available in all good supermarkets here in the UK, tis good stuff. Yum. Have fun in Tokyo. How long does it take you to get there from your neck of the woods?
Posted 6/11/2004 at 5:47 pm by pookybearcheung

You stay longer in Japan? You lucky bastard! The amenities in Shinkansen and TGV are alright. I prefer Shinkansen's!

Well since youre so good at ironing, youre more than welcome to do the ironing I have over here *it has piled up and now occupies two armchairs *

My daughter now adores pandas they are really kawaii! When she saw some badgers on TV she said, "their colors are like the panda isnt it?"

Well, I've officially been MIA. I would still love to have a little international exchange extravaganza.

My little cousin loved the little panda thing I had originally intended to send off to you....so I'm in a search for new pandagoodness.

I really don't know what I want...you can surprise me with something or other. But some little Badtz Maru thing would be quite fun

This is me signing off. Have fun in Tokyo

Depressingly down

about the sketchy webserver: complain to to better business bureau www.bbb.org. chances are some other people are feeling the same as you are!

i think anywhere we go, the same baggage comes along with us. my friend went to spain hoping for some new life to begin, but she came back the same and feeling about spain as she did here. not that there was nothing there to do, but it wasn't the place she thought it would be.

Eikaiwa-whore gaijin thats funny. But Man that sucks that you are havin a bad time. Im very use to disgusting humidity but I cant stand gray skies all the time. But I hope your new school is better and things work out for ya.
Posted 6/25/2004 at 7:37 pm by ddsb2000

Bah. I wonder if that feeling of elation when you first arrive in a new country can be retained anywhere you go if you stay for a long time. The school does sound awful, though. I really hope you find somewhere better. Also, I too, am very affected by the weather. Which means, because I live in England and one never knows what the weather will be like from one day to the next, my mood swings are all over the place. I sympathise with you. (This is random_pixie, by the way; I've moved ).

I was actually considering working in Japan for a bit a while back, but your sentiments don't seem to be uncommon, so... ^_^'

hey, i actually saw you in tokyo at the recontracting conference. for a second i was like, "hey! it's michael panda! wow!" it was like seeing a movie star, but i then i remembered you aren't a movie star. anyhow, i saw you. wierd, when the internet world collides with reality.

Summer Sunshine

Wow... Hawaii doesnt compare to the heat back in Japan, plus the humidity can get way WORST in there... every time you lift up a single arm you here a wet velcro like sound *shivers from the thought*. Hey, is it the year when those fat loud crickets come out? I miss the sound very much T_T.

i love that picture of the waterfall..beautiful.

i think we all set goals and have regrets at some point in our lives, but the best thing to do is consider what we didnt do with what we did accomplish. it all balances out...eventually =) you'll be staying a 2nd year..will u be here for a 3rd?

don't forget to keep yourself rehydrated, dude... nisshabyou is a bitch!! :p
well, at least you're getting seasons... ... ... uh-huh... that really justifies anything.

you know, your example about the justificiation of the school HAVING AC but not USING it... or rather, the kyoutou sensei's justifications of it... is sort of like... oh, i dunno... the US's justifications for fucking around in Iraq? I dunno... do you see the connection?

*BUWAHAHAHAHAHA~!!!!!*

THE END.

Posted 7/7/2004 at 11:01 am by costoso

i tend to keep doing the same thing even though it's not good for me until it really hits me that i need to change my habits.

that's why it's hard for me to make friends. on one hand, i really love people who i can click with. on the other hand, it totally sucks when they leave. feeling left behind is a common theme in my life. what is my theme song? depends on when you ask.

weeeoew those are such pretty pictures! expecially that waterfall. the states are pretty much the same... boring and dumb. this summer is stupid haha. T_T;; Yes on the spirited away dvd I was watching the extras and they were talking about how the director came up with the drawing scheme from a real place in Japan in which he visits alot cause it's his favorite place. ^-^ I hope I can go to Japan senior year or even earlier.

yeah, my bad on not saying "what's up." i have the feeling the conversation would have gone something like:

"hey, dude, i read your xanga. your michael panda."

"hey man, i have no idea who you are"

- uncomforable silence settles over our heads like rain clouds.

"um, yeah, well, hm. i just realized we're both dudes. no reason for us to keep chatting then."

or something like that. keep posting man!

Hope things improve on the language front for you. Seems like you had fun at the party though

Re. your comment from a while ago - I'm off to Singapore for a few weeks this summer, which should be cool. Other than that, not a lot planned, except, you know, determining the direction my life should take *scowl*. Or I may just sit around and drink tea instead.

Ahhhhhh!!! You look like you had fun!! Wish our JET functions were as fun... Mmmm.....lazy Sunday's, aren't they the best? I totally know what you mean about studying Japanese....I came with the sole purpose of becoming fluent....now, I'm leaving soon and I can still barely carry a conversation. It's sad and pathetic really. But I just hate that look that people give me when I speak with an accent...it's look, "Hmmm...she didn't look like she was retarded..." not a real excuse of course...just one I like to use often ;) Good luck with the translation course...I heard it's quite a bit of work.

in responce to the coment on my site - Yes I am moving to Kanazawa. Kanazawa - Takaoku(?) Well that is the name I was given by the peppy kids club (the school I will be working for). I'm not sure if that is by you or not. I looked up takaoku on Yahoo and found nothing on a city called that. I looked up Kanazawa though (as you can probably tell by my site) and found a bunch of information. Still not sure if I am looking at the right area of the country but I can't be far off, it's not that big of an island.

Thats awesome that you can translate ketai plans. When I go to japan im gonna have to hit you up for info as well. But as far as what you should get..the speakers look pretty cool but then again so does that ketai.
Posted 8/18/2004 at 3:03 am by ddsb2000

Ah, you don't want me to help you decide. I would say: Buy both!

That phone is zetai awesome!! But if you wait a short period, maybe the price will come down?
...and those speakers are really a nice pair of gadgets!! I want those, but they are sooooo overpriced!!

Difficult decision, but I would go for the phone!
Posted 8/18/2004 at 6:49 am by Kittos

i giggled so much during this blog that my mom actually asked what i was doing. hahahaha

as for the decision.....gah...i don't know. ummm i'm going to say the speakers. but either choice would be wonderful.

guess who is going to the post office tomorrow?!?! eeee i love sending packages. it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Posted 8/25/2004 at 10:07 am by Kittos

Money is money and pandas are pandas, Maimai. You've got to obtain them any way you can and if Vodawhoring and losing dignity is the only way to grab 'em both first, I'd say do it.

But seriously, I admire you for doing what you are doing and living it up in Japan. And think of these experiences positively; at least your stories are going to blow most everyone else's out of the water. :)
Posted 8/26/2004 at 1:59 am by momolo

I've met a lot of corporate whores during my time in the b-school, but you truly take the cake - congrats!

Birthday Panda

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAIMAI!
25 sounds old, but it really isn't. Here's something to chew on: "Youth is a quality, not a matter of circumstances."
That's from Frank Lloyd Wright. Anyway, take life and savor it like delicious KFC mashed potatoes. Mmmm...
You're still my friend even if you are one year older than 24. Hell, I'll let you in on a secret. R is 38.
You ought to tell your school that the Nazi flag is a symbol that most sane Germans have been trying to get over... :P

Happy, Happy Birthday Mr Panda!!!

Posted 9/13/2004 at 12:39 pm by southern_sun

Happy birthday, It was my birthday yesterday (the 12th) and I'm 23. I feel like I am growing up but not OLD. 25 is only 2 years older so it is not that bad. you don't have to worry for another 5 years. :P
Posted 9/13/2004 at 12:45 pm by japangelle

Happy Birthday! Age is but an illusion. I still feel about 12, and always will do
Posted 9/13/2004 at 5:52 pm by Krendalin

if you're a good boy maybe i'll take you on a horsie ride when you visit as a birthday present. go hokkaido horsies!!
uniform sex is very comfortable.. but er.. i guess she meant "a set uniform is comfortable". i think an interview with the student is in order to find out the real answer.
Posted 9/14/2004 at 12:47 am by KittyinJapan

happy birthday!!! 25 isn't so bad, is it? at least you'll get cheaper car insurance when you head home!

the nazi flag is hilarious....seriously.
Posted 9/14/2004 at 3:22 am by destinyz

also, i think the symbol for temples on maps is the nazi sign, isn't it?
Posted 9/14/2004 at 3:23 am by destinyz

HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY MR. PANDA! ^_^

*ahh to be 25 again I dont feel like my age-- Im a Peter Pan *

*giggles* i love the story of the flag...but don't u think u should clue them in?
Posted 9/15/2004 at 7:45 am by laughterhere

Happy Birthday! (No no, 25 isn't old.)
I missed your updates, so I was glad you finally got around to it. :P I love the pictures...you're always so funny!
Posted 9/15/2004 at 8:41 am by irisetofall

Thought that is a Nazi flag by color try to look at it and think of it as a Buddist Symbol (maybe hindu) instead. IT IS WHAT IT IS (SNL shout out). Anyway, thanks for the comment on liking my work. It does mean alot. About the weekend, I intend to update later with a story, which I will follow up with the truth. But, let's just say the Jungle Juice Jane and I made worked real well. Heiwa!

Cool layout! ^_^

Enjoy your week off! U deserve it! ^_~
Posted 9/16/2004 at 7:49 am by anjuliet

i directed some friends to this site to gawk at the tribute to nazi germany. shocking, but funny as hell.

garden state was great....i know they're getting ready to release it overseas sometime soon, but i don't know when or where.

the soundtrack is admittedly a little depressing, but it has some really great songs on it. i don't know if this says anything, but i couldn't take it out of my car's cd player for almost 3 weeks. AND i just put it back in after a week's hiatus. shocking.

aaaaaaaaaaaand, don't feel bad about the package. i'm sitting here looking at yours and hanging my head in shame. we're horrible. hahaha but at least we're horrible together.
Posted 9/16/2004 at 1:29 pm by amelie_mello

hey, happy birthday!!

you are right about the Mac configurations, but they suit quite well for the purpose you want to use your computer for.

Bring your panda to work day.

artificial cheese spread is my sometimes guilty pleasure!
i remember that story...pretty horrifying. :P
anyway, hope things are slightly better now that taxes are over and that sort of thing!
Posted 9/27/2004 at 9:31 am by momolo

taxes... ay.. they do sting. even so be glad youre not from Taxachusetts. as i understand they are one of the only states that taxes you on your income when living abroad. even the us govt dont care so long as your under 80k. ergh... hail the power of tea, artificial cheese spread, the mac and cheese mystery powder and that really scary moving image of pandas youve got up there. -andyout

cute, but... whats w/ the vibrating pandas?
Posted 9/28/2004 at 1:12 am by technocolorfille

Eek, what a mortifying childhood experience. Strange how things come back to haunt you, especially when it's artificial cheese spread.

Re. your comment: this may sound unbelievable, but I know at least ten people around my age and older who can't drive (which is sort of strange, because I'm still very much in the minority). While it would be very convenient to do so, not being a driver isn't so 'unheard of' in the UK as it is in the US. (This is a very good thing for me, as I am scared of/detest driving).
Posted 9/28/2004 at 1:30 pm by Krendalin

Naw, not Yokohama. I'm the prefecture over. Shizuoka. 45 minutes by bullet train, 2 hours by JR away from the big Yoks. It's not a bad placement. Close enough to the cities, but far enough to feel the slower pace of life. I'd like to visit Kanazawa one day. I'll be sure to find you and crash your pad. Hahaha.

Hey, here's another Jet! I love your blog!!! Sugoku kawaii!!!
Posted 10/3/2004 at 10:20 am by koyuki4ever

Your story about visiting your father at work had a creepy wonder years feel to it. Now that I think about it, the wonder years would have been an awesome show if someone had thought to use a bone saw on fred savage. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

As far as taxes go: they figure out how much money you owe the government using a series of complicated dice rolls even the tax people don't understand. If worst comes to worst, you could always offer to pay them off with fiery bone putty this year
Posted 10/4/2004 at 8:48 am by Paracetamol

Those are such cute pandas! That bone saw bit was gruesome ICK!

Take care!
Posted 10/4/2004 at 12:31 pm by grumpybear

Just a bit curious...those pandas vibrating cause they over ingested that wonderful cheddar cheese concoction you got there? Also, I like the big words, they fun. I use small words and I can't spell them right. Ask your Brit friend if he's got harry on his boat. Then when he gets mad make it up to him by buying him a Britney. The scar story is up. Enjoy!
Posted 10/5/2004 at 3:53 am by ATSchavez

Thanks for the Sarah McLachlan suggestion, I will investigate that

I'm not surprised that you wound up with luggage related flight problems, I'm just truly shocked you got out of O'Hare without any drama's. The airport is a nightmare, plain and simple.
I hope the travel was worth all the grief, next time you book an airplane ticket, cancel the payment midway, when they ask where their money is reply "Somewhere between my bank and your accounts office"
That'll learn em

Screwed...?

I agree. Hopefully I'll graduate and get into JET quickly enough to escape at least a couple years of his regime. I really couldn't believe he won. That republicans won virtually everything. In my state, our new state senator supports the death penalty for doctors that have performed abortions (except himself of course). It's really strange being liberal in Oklahoma of all places. At least my University has a fairly strong liberal community, but even in young University students, this IS the "buckle of the bible belt" or some crap.
Posted 11/4/2004 at 12:07 pm by ClumsyPanda

What's even worse is that both the senate and the supreme court are now stacked with conservatives who will, no doubt, back him up on anything he wants.
It makes me sick that he represents America. I hate to think of how the rest of the world views us..
Posted 11/4/2004 at 7:07 pm by irisetofall

best oven mitt in the WORLD!!
I thought the Japanese avoided making anyone lose face, lest that person say, commit suicide. Why do you have to put it in the bin on a certain day? Can't it just wait there until the proper day when someone comes to pick it up? But perhaps that is too logical? Also, not in JET yet, but investigating it- I thought they set up your housing- they put you in a building where sex workers shit on the stairs??
I don't know if I said so last time I commented here, but your ID is cuuuute.

I know what you mean about being very affected by your environment - it makes so much difference to how I am, how I function, depending on living situation, weather etc., and I'm always very conscious of this.

That garbage system is scary. And it's interesting how a relatively small thing like that can be representative of Japanese attitudes/culture as a whole. I should imagine it's like that for a lot of other 'small' things in Japan as well. If that makes any sense.

we used to get that crud about garbage when i lived in the nova apartment.they called up nova and they threatened to dock our pay cause of it. only once did they actually catch us, when we threw away english newspapers on burnables day. apparently they aren't burnable, but recyclable, but not to be put out on normal recyclables day, instead there was some magic day once a month for newspapers, but they wouldn't tell us what day!!!

my gawd panda...i had NO IDEA they would sift thru the garbage...i've heard the story so many times, but i thought it was just some exaggeration...but wow...

btw...ALWAYS shred up ANY papers with your name on it...u never know who's going thru ur garbage ;) even back home...i have a shredder...dun want no one taking my identity (altough, who would wanna?)

that's sooooooooo frustrating that they blamed the "foreigners" for the problem....easy solution for them....*hugs*

Wow.... I would never have thought that about Japan. I always thought that they had their own "culture" but not to the extent that you describe it, with the "well that's just how it is...you wouldn't understand because you're a foreigner". Wow... I've always wanted to visit Japan, but I don't think I could live there and deal with the racism.

I hope that your letter makes a ripple or something... I agree that you have to stand up for yourself, and you made a good point about interalizing the adults. They seem to be the ones that think there is no world outside of Japan. I can't believe that they called you at work and talked to your supervisor about it. Is it really your bosses job to educate you about their crazy schedules?

Good luck with the letter, like I said, I hope something comes of it.

Take Care!

hey man. don't let it bring you down. there's no point.

I don't know about a third year. There are days I want to and days I don't. How about you? It sounds from your post that your JET roller caoster ride is currently at the big plunging part. Is it snowing where you are yet?

Japan is not a nice place....

That is just awful about what's happening to your friend! The school should take responsibility with keeping the keys so that no one really has access to it except the teachers and "higher-ups" and I think they should have a more open mind and consider that a student might have stolen those tests. Gawd! I hate that kind of thinking!

~hugs~ to your friend and I hope this gets sorted out.

Where's my Tarepanda?

oh my god... what a long ass post! It's terrible about what has happened to your friend.

Ah, a cohort streaming against the currents of facsim in Japan.

I was hoping your post would help me answer the timeless question, 'stay or go' but I still seem to stare up at my own monotone ceiling, wondering.

Hooray for light-hearted blogs turning into rants! Visit my page!

That truly was a loooooong post, but in all, it was a good read.

While I do sympathize with what your friend is going through, the disappearance of 175 tests would have been no small matter, in my schools in Japan or at any I know here in Canada(though definitely not newspaper worthy...even if it is a local paper). But having said that, I think what her school is doing with the situation is the best example of the level of imcompetence in Japanese schools. In all honesty, if I was your friend, I would leave for Christmas and just not go back. Life's just too short to deal with that kind of bullsh*t. Did she finally agree to "keep her mouth shut?" This whole notion of keeping the 'wa' is the biggest piece of garbage. The reason she was used as a scapegoat is most definitely because she doesn't speak any Japanese and hence, unable to make any sort of stand.

Since leaving Japan, I've started missing some of the things I took for granted, but for me, if being in Japan means only being an English teacher, I will likely never be in Japan again with anything other than a temporary visitor's visa.

So that was a really long entry. Interesting, though. I liked it.

Recieving comments from you always makes my day. :)

That picture came from here: www.havesomehats.com

As for my Christmas plans, I believe I'm staying home and my grandparents are coming to visit. Family stuff is so boring..but I believe I'll be having a lot more fun New Years Eve. ;)

damn bro, you win the Crime and Punishment award for longest-post-of-all-time. Sounds like Japan has you down just a bit. Thankfully winter break is here. Your pictures make me laugh. Your posts make me sad. But at the end of the day, I feel like a better person having read your site.
Posted 12/18/2004 at 11:40 am by coolnahalf

oh yeah, going to Korea for break. Gonna get my fuyu no sonata on. you?
Posted 12/18/2004 at 11:40 am by coolnahalf

That post was your longest yet Panda-san, you've surpassed yourself

BTW you're a great writer and I actually read your 10 000+ words 0_0

It really sucks about your friend. Did anything happen after that? I can't imagine still staying in that school after that *shivers*. urgh

Man, you are like the voice of my frustration that I can not put into words! Try to keep your head up though and goodluck deciding on staying a third year or not. The love/hate relationship with Japan endures endlessly.
