POTD: Vegetarians need not apply

Wendys Japan wound up being another victim of the economy, announcing that it would officially shutter its doors once and for all on December 31st, 2009. Since I've been a good panda this year in terms of my diet, I decided to reward myself by stopping by the local branch for a farewell meal: a classic double cheeseburger, french fries and oolong tea. (how very all-American, save the tea part). I wasn't the only one with this idea however - I had to queue for nearly an hour before I could get in the door!

@Andrew: Smart man! Sadly I only found out they were going out of business a few days before they shut down for good, so I had no choice but to endure the line for some delicious meatah goodness one last time. Oh well. At least we still have Burger King.

I too will miss the goodness that is Wendy's. I thought about going there on their last day, but was told the line was about 2 hours or so. Fortunately I had a "last meal" about a week before.

@moritheil: hmm, I don't know about Iceland, but my impression is that here at least, it has less to do with foreign branding and more to do with just the economy in general? For one thing, lots of other foreign brands are cleaning up here during the recession (McDonalds, Forever 21, H&M, Apple, etc.) One thing's for sure, there seem to be tons of Wendys fans in Japan - the queues in the last week it was open were insane!

Wow. McDonald's closed in Iceland, too. I wonder if there is some kind of backlash against foreign foods in a time of economic crisis, or if it's merely the same economic pressures as ever at work.

I know, right!? WTF!? I was so pissed - crappy ass McDonalds is everywhere, but Wendys goes out of business and I have to drag my ass halfway across Tokyo to find one of the few Burger Kings around. *sigh* NOT FAIR JESUS.

That sucks dood! Wendy's is by far the best one of the big three. You're totally getting jipped.
