Shinjuku Birthday Panda ver. Blue Skies

Yeah, so I haven’t updated in forever…! What else is new? So what has happened recently, you ask? Well, for one thing, I became another year older. Sadly, I am starting to run out of birthdays in which I can still refer to myself as a “20-something” year old. That’s not so good. Adding to the glumness of it all, if my plans for next year still hold, it means that I’ve got less than 365 days left here in Japan. That my friends, was enough to drive me into something of a depressed state for a while. Sigh. I don’t want to leave Japan, but…

Anyway, glum thoughts about my future not withstanding, I did have quite a nice birthday – snagged myself a sweet iPod touch and some equally sweet high-end sony headphones, which I have had my eyes on for some time. I was torn between the iPod and a top of the line Canon 580 EX II Speedlight for my camera – neither was exactly cheap so it was decision time. I’m glad I went with the iPod, but my camera was mad at me for a while.

Speaking of cameras, I was in Shinjuku yesterday for a dessert viking (“viking” being the japanese word for “all you can eat buffet”) at the Shinjuku Hilton (I commented to Matchamonkey that I must have truly become inured to the lifestyle here in Japan because I didn’t blink twice when my friend informed me that the dessert buffet would be 3600 (roughly $36 USD) – when I lived in America if someone told me we were going somewhere that cost $36 per person for dessert I would have laughed in their faces. Now I’m like “mm, where do I sign up?!”). Anyway, as I was wandering around waiting for my friend (who was late due to getting stuck in the hour-long lines at the new H&M in Ginza. H&M, for my American friends who don’t know, is like the Gap of Europe – I mean, it’s nice, but can you imagine waiting in line for 2 hours+ to get into Gap…? Then again, I suppose it’s roughly on par with the queues that built up for donuts at Krispy Creme and the opening of the Apple store in Japan a few years ago…).

Ahem. Where was I? Oh yes, so as I was waiting for my friend, it struck me that for some reason I don’t have any pictures of Shinjuku up on my blog. A lot of people find Shinjuku boring compared to other parts of Tokyo, but I have always appreciated its soaring skyscrapers and multiple conjoined identities. Plus yesterday the clouds and sky were being all dramatic and stuff, and you all know how I feel about beautiful blue skies (thank you mistar circular polarizer), so I took a few shots as I walked around.

Haha, Hilton should pay me to let them use this image in their brochure

Even though this is a really random assortment of photos, it’s these kinds of simple every day scenes that I find so beautiful about Tokyo – on any given day you can simply look up and see these kinds of visuals surrounding you. One of these days I’ll go back and do a proper photographic set from Shinjuku, but hopefully for now these images can sort of convey what it was like out yesterday.

More shots after the Keep Reading link below.

This strikes me as the “stereotypical” Shinjuku image. Click here for larger image

Heading home after a long day…

Okay that’s it! Thanks for reading!

Now listening to: Nelly – Body on Me (feat. Ashanti and Akon)

Coincidentally, this is the song that was playing on my iPod in the picture above… It just makes me want to dance! It also makes me want to work out – damn Nelly got buff since his last album!

Happy Birthday! Given the results of your photography, your camera doesn’t seem mad at all.
On first glance, that image is certainly a stereotypical big city street corner shot. However, I like how you’ve managed to capture people and vehicles not as the typical blurs, but as individuals.

I’ve found the secret to extended the 20-something answer. Vegas for your birthday! (Because what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, so you only gain the year there.)
    Silly? nah..
btw, I think Cosmos are considered girly because they’ve been associated with Sex and the City and because they’re colorful. Truthfully, they are pretty strong.
